I have been debating on wether I want a 350 or a 383. I would love to stuff a 383 in there and do not think I would have any problem passing the visual inspection for california unless the ran the casting number for the block. Other than that the only difference is the freeze plug locations right(at least on the outside)? They dont run casting #s do they?

A 383 is a 350 block punched 30 over, with a crank from a 400 smallblock. You can't just slap a 400 crank in, there is a considerable ammont of machining that must be done for this to happen.... As for visual, unless you tell them its a 383 they won't know, looks just like a 350!:) :skull:

I knew you had to enlarge the journals and other stuff of a 350 block for good clearance of the 400 crank but the smog tech I talked to said some companies actually sell 383 blocks. He may be full of shit though. Thx guys. I would hate to have pull out my new engine cause it failed the visual.

Tell 'em it's a 350 and stick to it .
The grill of my truck says 400 so that's what the smog guys think.
That 350's been passing everytime:rolleyes:

hey whattya know

the 400 crank is externally balanced , is it not?

my 400 had a big dip in the balancer, this was due to it being externally balanced as opposed to internally balanced like a 350, 305, 327 etc...

just a thought!

when i go wrecker yard scrounging, im always keeping my peepers open for a dip in the balancer, they charge $199 for any motor you can find, you pull!

The 400 is externally balanced. Takes a special harmonic balancer, and flywheel/or flexplate.
The blocks that are advertised as 383's are actually 350 blocks that have been machined to accept the 400 crank. Normanlly comes as a shortblock, crank, rods, pistons, but you have to aquire the balancer and flywheel.:skull:

Thanks for the details. the dip in the balancer is a good thing to know. I have changed my mind though. I am gonna sell my K5 :emb: , but I am gonna use the money to buy a 1 ton long bed! :D And I am gonna get a 73 to boot....I hope.
