Hey! I need to separate my drag link from the tie rod. My pullers won't fit. The store had no pullers smaller than 1 1/8, which is what I already have. Tried the hammer, tried heat. Tried lube. Haven't cursed at it yet.
I have a pickle fork that looks like it will fit. But I am reluctant to ruin the seal. Can I get new seals? Maybe I could use the seal from the other end of the drag link (going to a Z-link temporarily). Help!

(Yes, I searched)

Pickle forks are for pickles... Not steering. :)

Just take 2 BFH and hit the joint from 2 opposing sides at the same time. After a couple of practice swings it will usually pop right off. Swings need to carry some energy.

Works great on just about everything but pulling pitman arms themselves.

I've tried using a special puller with thin jaws...doesn't work 50% of the time because the jaws aren't strong enough...they just start to bend. I almost always break out the pickle fork for rod ends. Prety much guaranteed to damage the seal though. The seals are easy to come by; I don't have P/N's or anything, but I've bought them from a few parts stores...
You said you tried heat...if the seal is still good you didn't heat it enough :D

rotozuk: the BFH method sounds cool...never heard of that. Where exactly do you strike the rod end? On the threaded end and the cap?

Hey! Got it out. And I'm not a touch-typer and I don't have my stinkin' readin' glasses so its anybodys guess what me spelling will look like to me tomorrow.

I used the picklefork before I saw yer post Wayne. I had already ruined the seal with the heat.

I replaxed it with the seal from the other end of the replaced draglink.

Good to go,

Thanks
