: Started the Tear-Down...
Scout Dude 01-20-2002, 09:23 PM I started tearing into my Scout yesterday. I am moving my front spring mounts ~2" forward to help level out my springs. I am also switching to a 76 casting 4-bolt PS box. I cut my bumper off...I had to cut it into 7 pieces just to get it off. It weighed 60 pounds by itself...with the SR mount that I built last year, I had 80 Pounds of crap hanging on the front end. I am going to replace the front bumper with some tube creation to help lower the weight (Actually, to help offset the winch weight). I feel a whole lot better about my new design. I am able to get in and build this thing right....finally.
Anyway, here are the pics that I promised...I'll post more on Tuesday.

Cutch 01-21-2002, 05:03 AM My Scout is still sitting in my driveway after purchasing it 2 months ago.
Still trying to figure out if I need to tear it down or up. Everything is all so confusing for me :D
Good luck on your project

Don't do it!!
Don't make the same mistake I made. This weekend Abba hauled the remains of my 'tear down' home to his place. I bought my 74 5 years back, pulled the carpet and discovered rust. That was the end, I torn the whole Scout down to the ground. I've learned my lesson. If you want to save your Scout complete project by project.

Follow Joe's advice. BTDT. :D
I WILL finish the "nice daily driver" project one of these.. uhh.. years.. but I'm too stubborn to give up on it.
My '72 SII needed $1000 worth of brakes 9 months after I bought it. I parked it.
Bought my '77 for parts, turned out it drive nicely and I had a running/driving Scout again..
I was going to have the body mounts replaced (someone owed me a favor).. turns out, I got more work done to me than to the Scout, and no vaseline.
Finally got my Scout back, less a large wad of cash, with no fixed body mounts, and the added bonus of kicked-in quarters (that were perfect..)
In any case, it's currently a parts storage bin with no seats and no engine/trans/xfer.. but it WILL live again.
Still, I find I work a lot better when I have a near-term goal to reach.
Don't tear the rig down to the frame and start media blasting if all it really needs is the body mounts replaced - replace the mounts, and drive it some more n' enjoy it.. then tackle the next step.
Otherwise you might forget why it is you want to fix this old Scout up in the first place.. it becomes a chore, not a hobby (like finishing my stupid garage.. 9 months of pretending to be a construction worker instead of my usual pretending to be a mechanic..)
nwmud 01-21-2002, 12:29 PM DO IT!!!! It feels good.
:flipoff2:
I want more people to understand my project. Check my website to see what I mean. I have a nice clean bare frame. We are making all new hangers and using Ford springs, MUCH longer than stock in the front.
This way when you done 6 or 7 years from now - you can say you built it from the frame up and you will know everything in it. have a couple of   and think about it - you know I am right.
Seriously - It's a lot of work and has hidden cost you have never dreamed of. Don't start this jkind of a project unless you are truly motivated and know you will not rest until it is done.
Seriously have a couple of   and think it over before starting.
Ritch :p

I didn't have a clean bare frame.. but I had a pretty much nekkid frame with a nekkid body tub on it.
I spent probably 6 months doing "prep" work - stripping the donor chassis, rebuilding the 727, collecting more parts, setting up the R&Ps, etc..
and then spent one LOOONG week throwing the truck together.
Friday evening I had a gutted body tub bolted to a bare frame lying in the dirt.
9 days later I had the motor/trans/xfer installed, wired, steering column & box installed, radiator, front clip, axles and springs and brakes, rollcage, seats, and a few other bits n' pieces.
That was a LONG week. 10, 12 hour nights AFTER work.. OTOH, it'd been a long time since I'd seen a sun rise... (hint: when you see the sun rising, it's time to put down the wrenches and go catch 40 winks before work..)
There were a lot of things that ended up getting improved upon after that.. I'm still weeding out the weak parts. :D
6-7 years? I'll be OLD by then!
scoutver5.7 01-21-2002, 03:06 PM Well now,
It's been 5 loooong years since I spun a cam bearing and started the tear down and build-up. Engine is done. Body work is done. Tranny and t-case are in exploded view on the bench. New seats are installed on new bases. New tires are on sandblasted and powder coated wheels. Fender flares on order. Poly body mount bushings on order. Two new ring and pinions and new detroit locker under bench. Wagoneer front axle laying on floor. New air compressor next week and I'll be ready for paint.
Still have to order engine and tranny mounts (RPT), SSII door inserts and roll cage.
Then there is the pile of steel that will become the new front shock towers, front and rear bumpers, tire carrier, roof rack, and skid plates.
She HAS to be running by June.
Cliffy [JD] 01-21-2002, 03:44 PM DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously do just enough to getting it wheeling "SAFELY" and then do PROJECT-BY-PROJECT after that, you'll enjoy your rig sooooooooo much better.
If you tear it all down at once it's gonna take so long one day you're gonna look at it and say "I've had this thing for ___ years now (fill in appropriate number) and I STILL haven't driven it!! Is it even worth it, then you'll go get a scout that runs and do just what I suggested in the first place.
That's my plan anyway, getting the drivetrain beefed, then after a year or so (or as it's REALLY needed) I will replace body mounts, engine, tranny, X-fer...blah blah blah.
I learned from my last project.
PS: and mine HAS to be done by MAY or sometime before the next RMIHR (is that how it's written??)

Yep, RMIHR. Rocky Mountain IH Rendezvous (http://www.rmihr.org) Next to the last weekend of July.. 20th-ish.
Even talked Rustoleum White into.. well.. FLYING down.. last year. :)
I may or may not drive down through Wyoming this year - I've had such bad luck on that stretch of highway I'm tempted to come down through SLC instead. :D
scoutver5.7 01-21-2002, 04:04 PM Oh,
I forgot to say when I get her goin' again, she'll only be half done, but at least I can drive her while doin' the ongoin' projects.

I get to drive it today, no safety inspection, no insurance.....my buddy who has a dealer plate has let me have it so I can drive it to get work done on it. I'm covered under his policy.:bounce:

BTDT!! Just ask Abba, he hauled the tub away from my failed frame off.
Scout Dude 01-22-2002, 09:38 AM I feel a little left out...What the heck does BTDT mean?

Yeah, I've been going across I-90 to Billings, MT, then headin' south on I-25 and turning west on I-70 (I think it's actually I-76 to I-70) and then coming over Breckenridge and down into Fairplay.
I'm told I should take the state highway 2-lane through Grant on into Fairplay and then down to Salida this year.. but.. *shrug*
I've been heading home through Moab - usually on my way to Seattle, but this year I may just come home - we have our annual Divide Ride trail ride near Ennis the weekend of NWBRU this year.
Might keep me from three-peating on the Ugliest Truck award..
Say, Hooper.. how's it feel knowing a pseduo SSII conversion keeps winning Ugliest Truck? :flipoff2:

Well, I don't know about the route from Helena to Cheyenne, but The rest sounds right to me. We'll talk again about it when the time comes. Maybe we could pick up my buddy in Loveland when we pass through. Or maybe not, he owns a Jeep.

As long as you ain't here during the olympics, you should be ok. I'm gonna hate going to work then. no matter which route I take, I have to cross 2 traffic hotspots. 14 hour days, with travel. :mad3:
I won't be there when you come through. I plan on NWBRU this year, don't think RMIHR is in the budget. one of these days I'll make the CO-->WA commute with ya

Mute point now that it is in Salida. It's easier to just go south to the springs and then head across on 50.....
Hmmm, that means it is closer to the drive-in we saw last year.:flipoff2:

All the way to Colorado Springs? ICK. I drove that ONCE and all I remember is stop n' go traffic the whole way from Denver to Colorado Springs... :puke:

Blow me:flipoff2: , wife and two kids does not make it easy to finish a frame off. Besides I'm having too much fun with the running 75 and I was tired of the nagging about all the parts scattered around the house.

Great idea - she's been complaining about the couch and i have 3 extra back seats. I could replace all my furniture with Scout and bronco remakes.:D :D :D
I keep telling people i'm only two weeks away from a running truck... Too bad that two weeks of work will be strung out over months. The only draw back to not having all the tools, knowledge and help in your own back yard. But I am possitive my truck will rock when its done do to the help of all my friends...
Don't give up - just build it!

There's a Scout II "Love seat" in my bedroom next to the TV.
It's the old "Deeeluxe" interior front bench from my '72.
It used to live in the Garage but the garage got full.. hmmm.. tho' now that the new shop is nearing completion, I might need a comfy seat to put next to the shop TV. :D
