: Argh!!!
GloNDark 01-21-2002, 09:02 AM FAWKING TOYOTA AXLES!!
Broke another pinion on Saturday. Traction bar worked freaking awesome!! But snapped the rear pinion after about 30 minutes of wheeling. :mad3: And I am now looking for a mid 70's Chevy 3/4 ton with an auto tranny to part out and make the cruiser a Chevy with a cruiser body! :D Anybody got an old chevy around they wanna get rid of???
Check out the picks here.......http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&postid=259683#post259683
More to come!!
BJ On Roids 01-21-2002, 01:23 PM TIME to FINE SPLINE!:D
gunracer1 01-21-2002, 01:26 PM i sold him two sets of fine spine gears. i am suprized you broke one so quick. mine have held up good but i have a auto and a doggy 3f. mike
Jason M 01-21-2002, 01:49 PM Glo, can you get a picture of your trac bar for us? What is your pinion angle? Any driveshaft binding???
FJ45Mike 01-21-2002, 04:20 PM Give me a call about those switches. Since your rig is not a stocker I will show you a better option when you come up.

joshfj40 01-21-2002, 08:41 PM I 2nd the request for a trac bar pick
GloNDark 01-22-2002, 07:27 AM Time for 1 ton baby!!! Not fine spline! ;) They worked for a while, but the Toyota axles are just not cutting it anymore. :D:D:D
As for the track bar. I will get pics of it as soon as I get home tonight. Pretty simple, very effective, and doesn't seem to limit articulation at all. :D:D SWEET!
Arnett 01-22-2002, 01:28 PM I snapped my last rear pinion at the carson river hot springs goofin off a couple of years ago. I told myself the same thing. Now I have D60rear, TPI350, th400, D44 now I feel alot safer. What a difference it makes in strength and the confidence I have in my 40. :)

Must be effective if you keep breaking pinions???
So, did you get the pics of your trac bar yet?
Aggro 01-23-2002, 07:39 AM I find myself having doubts that the pinion (fine spline) broke from torque input. Guaranteed there was NO wrap or binding??? No offense, but are you a strictly stupid pedal wheeler? pics, pics, pics!:D

ZEERO WRAP!!!!! Count it......oh wait you can't. ZERO!!! hahaha
Trac bar worked the way I thought it was gonna. I truely believe that the weekend before (With no trac bar) was the end of that pinion. Why you ask? where the pinion broke, there were cracks that had rust on them. And to me, I see this as, I twisted the splines last weekend and finished it off on Saturday. The true test for the trac bar is this weekend, with the new pinion. And all 95 horse and 100 to 1 gear getting down on it! :D :flipoff2:
Aggro 01-24-2002, 07:17 AM I'll buy that!
joshfj40 01-24-2002, 09:00 PM wheres the pic????:D
GloNDark 01-25-2002, 07:43 AM DOH!!! Here is a pic. Not the greatest. The front of the traciton bar has a ford radius arm bushing on it. Didn't wrap at all. However I may add a third link at the bottom to help "triangulate" the traction bar on the axle. I will get some more pics tonight.
(OH yeah, check out the broken pinion!! DOH!!!!!!
Thanks for adding the picture. I would suggest you add the second lower bar on the axle and run it all the way up to the front of the bar. If you don't, you will bend the upper bar where the lower bar intersects. Too much force. Then add a few truss links between the upper and lower bars.
With a single link like you have, the axle will still rotate if you have enough torque on the axle. If you remove the leaf springs, there is nothing there to prevent the axle from rotating about the single link. With a second link at the axle, the axle can only follow the arc of the link radius. I think if your situation, the leaf springs are stiff enough to act like the second bar and that is why you don't see any wrap. That is a good thing. :D
ranger 01-25-2002, 08:42 AM Thats one hell of a pinion angle, or is it the pic..... :skull:
GloNDark 01-25-2002, 08:45 AM Must be the angle of the camera. Pinion is pointed roughly 2 degrees lower than the yoke on the t-case.
Jason M 01-25-2002, 10:53 AM Get more pics. I have seen a couple of pinions break because of a single top bar....
I bet if you did the triangulated bar you would be golden...
Another thought, Are your rear springs reversed? Have you actually looked at what the pinion does when you flex the rig?
On Deckers Website there is a nice picture that describes what happens when a reversed spring has a single bar...
http://www.hotcampshowers.com/pubimages/LCRearrwd50-333-203.jpg
during compression or extension your pinion should rotate away from the tcase output if you have your springs reversed...
Just an idea...
:D
GloNDark 01-25-2002, 11:35 AM That's a great pic! But you gotta remember that having the bar as close to center as it is, when the rear flexes out it wouldn't move as much.
So if I add another "link" to the bar, it wouldn't be affected to much by the articulation.
If the single bar is shorter than your front spring section, your pinion will dive down on droop. If the bar is longer, it will rotate it up. (these rotations are slight rotations, not drastic ones)
Adding the second bar will help the springs fight the wrap. As an added bonus, your springs will last longer since they won't be trying to turn into an 'S" from wrap.

Really?? I didn't know that. You learn something new everyday. My bar is longer than the front of the springs. Interesting. I will have added the second support by this weekend and I will post pics then. THANKS EVERYONE!
