Does anyone know if there is a difference in length between a 28 spline output on a 2x4 C4 a 28 spline output on a 4x4 C4. I am wanting to know if it would be possible to just unbolt the tail housing on a 2x4 and bolt the d20 xfer case adapter in its place.

I dont know the lengths but I am 100% sure you cant. But thanks for answering a question I had on my mind which was how many spline the C4 is. Now off to search on the spline for a 203 input shaft.

Nope, you can't. I've two 2x4 shaft as I was looking into resplinging them.
if you need measurements I can look them up.

Then what do I need to look for to put one behind a 302, in front of a dana 300 or atlas?

You can use a C4 from an early Bronco (hard to find), or swap a C5 output shaft from a 4wd '84-'85 Ranger or Bronco II, which is just a C4 with lockup converter.

If you can't find anything in the junkyard you can buy a shaft and tailhousing from Advance Adapters.

Is the c-5 any good?

C5 has a bolt pattern to fit a 2.8 V6. I think it wouldn't go onto a 302.

c-5 = C-4 with different bellhousing/VB/TC

swap a C-4 bellhousing/TC/VB onto a C-5, and you have a C-4, and yeah it will bolt to a SBF, with a SBF C-4 bellhousing bolted onto it.

Many people consider the C5 better core material than the C4. It has improved oiling system, with larger passages and higher flow, with better lubrication of the thrust washers. The hi/rev drum can take 7 clutch packs where the typical C4 can only fit 5. As was said already, you can swap the torque converter and valve body to turn it into a C4. The bellhousing is bolt-on, so swap it to match the engine you are using. There is even a rare bellhousing from '70s midsize that put a 400 in front of a C4, so you can use it with a big block. Need good ($$$) parts to make it live in that situation but some drag racers use C4 in light weight cars with 800+ hp engines with good results.

lots of good C4/C5 info here;
