: TJ rear leaf conversion
big blue tj 07-07-2004, 11:16 PM All of you that have done this what springs are you running?
What front coils are you running, Do you liek them and SOA or SUA?
Thanks
Chris
Bushwhacker 07-08-2004, 12:39 AM I did mine with 5.5" Rockkrawler springs and RE SOA leafs. It SUCKED!!!! Cheap ass coils sagged, leafs inverted, didnt flex worth shit, wrapped like crazy. Was cheap and quick, but not worth it. :barf:
Do a triangulated 4 link and be done with it.
Dirk00TJ 07-08-2004, 07:52 AM Well, I'm running RE 5.5" coils up front, and Old Man Emu XJ leafs in back with the OME extra leaf. (SOA)
I love mine. :grinpimp:

TJ Ken 03-21-2007, 10:47 PM I like the way mine's setup. It works great, flexes suprisingly quite well & will go up everything I've pointed it at so far.

BamaSahara 03-22-2007, 08:25 AM Ken what are the specs on yours? I did XJ springs SOA an RE 5.5's up front. Rear sits much higher than the front and the flex is average. Ride on road is not ideal. I have all the parts to go to a 4 link with CO's in the rear. I would agree with Bushwacker, just link it the first time even if you have to run coils. You can always go to coilovers later on, but it is probably just as cheap to link it with coils than it is to run leafs.

Did you use stock XJ leafs or lifted versions?
Of course, when determining ride height, a lot depends on where your mounts, etc are located.
My junk rides really nicely. I do enjoy driving it.
What shocks are you running?
I'd think that the right spring rate, tire pressures, and good quality shocks would produce a good ride, if you're set-up right.
milfordjeeper 03-22-2007, 09:08 AM my buddy did the swap hes running stock xj leafs in teh backwith a extra leaf, and re 5.5 coil but he wantto drop a bit ,bc even with 42s hes got room
TJ Ken 03-22-2007, 10:17 AM I'm running a Rockkrawler springs up front w/ a 1 3/4" spacer.
In the rear I'm using a 1" lift XJ spring flipped around & just some RS5000's.
It's comfortable up to 70 mph or so. :D
It's all torn apart right now, the front is going to get changed up quite a bit....you'll have to stay tuned for that.

What he said!!
BamaSahara 03-22-2007, 02:13 PM Dirk, I am running XJ leafs with an RE AAL for most of the time. I just recently pulled the AAL, and added an extra XJ main leaf and removed one of the smaller leafs. Ride got better, dropped the height about an inch but I bent a leaf on the second ride out. I am running Bilstein shocks which may be a little stiff, but the ride is still not where I would like it.
Bushwhacker 03-22-2007, 05:06 PM I like these much better than my leafs..hehe

I'd go with an OME XJ leaf pack and some different shocks. There are probably find some OME long travel shocks that would work, depending on your length requirements.
Some guys don't care about ride quality. I do, because I enjoy driving my junk on the street too.

This looks like a classic example of one of the reasons I like leafs. I'm not trying to start the leafs vs coils debate again either- build it however you want!
Rear coiled rigs tend to LEAN a lot, depending on how they are set-up.
Some guys like a leaf sprung front and coil rear too. I prefer links up front and leafs in back for the stability and the fact that set-up doesn't lean me over so much in off-camber situations and ceratin obstacles.
Just my opinion...
quarry adams 03-24-2007, 12:07 PM Im with dirk on this one. If you want a successful leaf setup. ya gotta tinker with it. As milfordjeeper pointed out.. i have stock xjs and an extra leaf, they sit flat and i have kinda too much room for 42s.. i dunno how mine rides yet as its not done. build yourself a decent ladder bar and wrap shouldnt be an issue..
BamaSahara 03-24-2007, 08:08 PM My trail performance is decent and I have a good ladder bar. I have coilovers setting on the table, that is what I will go to next.:D
Dookey 03-24-2007, 08:20 PM I'm gonna try the rear leaf setup again as I've had really good luck with it so far. I plan to step up to an OME 2" pack for the rear. Of course all my brackets are pushed as close to the frame as possible. With just the rear stretched I am at 105" of wheelbase. I'm not sure how much I will like the rear leafs with the V8 now but I'm going to give it a shot and link if I have to. :)
quarry adams 03-24-2007, 08:32 PM Clifford, you think you could post some pics of your rear shackle angle. im at 104 with the rear stretched and wanna see how your angle looks compared to mine
Dookey 03-24-2007, 08:37 PM I can take some pictures. I'm not sure if I have any specific shackle pictures though. I know for a fact that my shackles are at 55-56 degrees back on stock XJ packs.
Dookey 03-24-2007, 08:38 PM I found this one where you can see the shackle angle. With a taller pack the angle won't be quite that much but it won't change much either.

quarry adams 03-25-2007, 09:05 AM sweet thanks
quarry adams 03-25-2007, 04:29 PM as far as flex from leafs...

thats my flex, seems to match the front pretty well, which is the RE radius LA setup
