: 8274 problems

Ok, so I have a 8274 on the front of my CJ. And this spring I decided to go up to a 8274-50 motor on it. So I called up our local Six States and had them send me one. I put the thing on. Hooking up the ground on the bottom of the motor, and the positive (of course). When winching in, or out the thing boggs down. Like it is going to stop pulling. The motor gets hot also. I can stall the winch by holding the cable. That is how powerless it is. So, I send it back to Six States with the control box. They go threw it, replace some wires and send it back. Well today I put it on. Whats it do? Still boggs down and drags. I went ahead this time and replaced the positive cable with a new one. I took the motor off, and looked inside the winch to see if there were any gears that were siezed, or locked up. Nothing. It is like brand new inside the thing. My question is... What else is there? Like I said it is a older 8274 body, with a 8274-50 motor. The battery is a Optima also. Thanks.

I would check also into how the winch is grounded. I was thinking about putting the new motor on mine when I get enough funds set aside for it. If you get it fixed post up the answer to the problem.

I will keep you updated. I went outside and fooled with it some more. And I ran a ground wire from the motor to the frame (motor meaning 302) I didnt have one. So I did that. And tryed it. Seemed to sound fine. But, the motor gets terrible hot on the under side where I have the ground that goes from the winch motor to the battery -. I mean so hot you cant hold your hand on it. And there is no strain on it at all. So, I am going to change that ground over to a bigger cable. Going from the winch motor to the battery. See if that helps :shaking:

Also: When the motor is setting with out being switched it is holding 12 volts. When you go to reel the rope in, or out it drops to 10 volts. Is it suppose to drop like that?

Frank,

DO NOT RUN THAT MOTOR AGAIN UNTIL YOU TEAR THAT WINCH DOWN!!! :mad3:
Something is bound up inside and you are ruining that motor. Take the lid off of that thing and find out what is wrong.

Dan, I took the lid off. All the gears, and everything inside spin freely and fine. So far I have not been able to find anything wrong with the winch body.

Did you do the brake test I told you to do? My bet is the brake cam is frozen to the shaft. Just looking at something does not mean it is good.

What do you mean when you say it is "holding 12volts"? Are you measuring the voltage drop to the motor or across the motor or what? If you put your voltmeter across the positive and negative of the motor you want to see as close to battery voltage as possible. That way the motor has the maximum voltage available in the circuit. If the cables have excess resistance they will be drawing voltage away from the motor.

If its getting really hot near the ground cable then it sounds like the ground has too much resistance.

That's what I was thinking. I rewired mine to use #2 welding cable everywhere but the small relay wires. It always stays cool. I also run a direct battery ground.

So what is the brake test.

OK a little update..... Well, I have been going crazy over this thing. Since I have a group run tomorrow I have been rushing to try to get this thing fixed. Well, we did figure out one thing. When I took the old winch motor off, the sealed bearing stuck to the shaft.... :shaking: Therefore I never seen it. So as I was putting the new motor on.. I never put the bearing in there to give support to the shaft :shaking: . Well, since talking with Blackjack over the phone he asked what shape the bearing was in. And I was like "what bearing..." Anyways, I got the bearing on. And It was still dragging. So I just gave up.

Well today I have been driving the Jeep around town. I get home, and I thought I would just give it a shot. So I hooked it all up and the winch is fine. It has all its power, and is faster than ever.... So now I am thinking the I either wasnt getting all of its power or something in that nature. But as of right now it seems to be working excellent. I will give it the torcher test tomorrow on the trail and see what becomes of it. I will also post some pics of the trail run.

Franky, you should be rolling in from the trail run about now.....just thought I would help you find your post easy.

Update on the winch?

Pics of the run?

Well, we met at Tersoro at 9am. And I rolled in from the trail at 10am.... We got about half way there and Coles Jeep with the new 401 started having heating problems. So we decided it was best to turn it around and fix the problem. Our destination was Hatchers Pass. We were just going to put along the upper trail to the cabin. It would have been the first run for the Black Jeep with the new suspension. Right now at this moment Cole is out there putting a brand new radiator in it out of a '91 camaro. That Jeep radiator (which we knew) is not up to the test of cooling the 401. So we hope to get out tomorrow. But pics from the run.. Well.. This is where the Jeep set all day :shaking:

As for the winch. I cant find a thing wrong with it... I hooked the Jeep to our basket ball pole. Put it into gear, and pulled it with the winch. And let me tell you that thing will flat out pull. And I had the tires at full turn. So as of right now the winch is working perfect.

Pic of the drag mark... So maybe in the next day or so I will get on the trail and get ya'll some real pictures......
