: who runs CTM joints, and who has broken the shaft or the joint
Flatty 01-21-2002, 06:37 PM I am seriously considering running this setup, buit I wanna know what people think about them. I have talked to Jack, and now I want to know what people runnig them think about them. So far I have only heard of Lance breaking the Warn shafts. Has anyone else broken the shaft or the joint itself?

Frosty, last I heard you were sitting right next to me out here. The reason I don';t wheel now is because I have no rig anymore, but that is all about to change. Gonna pick up the new cruiser in Fresno in 2 weeks, then it is high time to build like a mad man. Every night till the wee hours of the AM.
PS, see you at the drunk fest coming up. You Tin Benders better not back out. Gonna be a field day out here, or are your livers not up to it... :flipoff2:

call me 1-800-266-0004
Mark
Flatty 01-21-2002, 09:25 PM Mark, I am buying it from Brian Ross. The cruiser has no motor, tanny or t-case, but that is how I wanted it anyway. I will call you, we can hook up and get some brews. Hope to see you at the festival.

to date nobody has broken a ctm joint. always the shaft.
i will be putting 1.75 40 spline 300m shafts behind my 1480 ctm. we shall see what breaks first,
X Frosty X 01-21-2002, 09:56 PM already makin my Puny D60 look like jUnk:flipoff2:
ctm's for me right after my NOS LOL

   Damn, now thats some beef!!
GRMhick 01-21-2002, 11:31 PM Hmm, who wants to take bets camo breaks that too??
crash 01-21-2002, 11:52 PM H8monday runs that setup doesn't he??
I think he beat the living crap outa them when the club went down to run the hammers, and they really held up nicely
badassjeepguy 01-21-2002, 11:55 PM yeap, he has pounded on em from what ive heard and theyve held up just fine.... if my warn shafts ever fawkin get here, ill be poundin on em too
I was talking with GOAT1. He ran some peliminary calcs and told me that they are good for about 12,000 foot lbs. That is some serious torque folks.
badassjeepguy 01-22-2002, 12:01 AM ahhh yeahhhhhhhhhh just the joint? or the warns also?

Camo will never break this new high tech stuff. He's not playing with those whimpy breakfields now. :flipoff2: Now that he has finaly stepped up, to some real axles, the carnage will be nothing but fond old memories.
No more "Kablamo Camo" :flipoff2:
Besides his engine is a couple cylinders shy of the power, he needs to break these new axles.
It sure would be a pretty picture though, to see those axles at the top of the JV Sand Dunes,.....ooooops my bad, there no way to get them up there. :flipoff2:
edit: I never said we wouldnt, still see plenty of rollovers.

I was amazed at how much abuse they took at the Hammers.
At the squeeze box, I was nose down over the rocks, I had the front driver side tire, bound up on the left side boulder, with the steering full locked to the left, and the locker engaged, I throttled it hard, straight into and up the rock. It was enough to clear the top of the right side boulder, so I throttled it again and just brute forced it through. I remember looking at the tire as I was climbing, and thinking I probably should have safety goggles on.
Its great to be able to choose the lines you want to take, and use all the power or tight steering you need. Instead of choosing a line that hopefully wont break your last good axle assembly.
All I can say is once you try em you will believe. They are very tough!

hmmm guessing the warn is under that....... so when are the 300m axles gonna be made... :D
Diesel Junkie 01-22-2002, 01:23 AM Dimi, forget about the CTM and warn crap for now...... just build your rig...WOrry about stroinger later
h8monday.
very funny big guy. :flipoff2: the whole idea is that i will be able to " rock crawl" at about 5000 rpm and just pound the living shit out of the axles with out failure. and i do belive that my 7th cylinder will get me over the top of that dune. ( I.E. 100 HP NOS shot )
for those that have not seen h8 wheel .
before ctm's he was a trail drunk. he would break a joint on every obstacle and by the end of the day he was drunk from all the opurtunitys we had to stop and have a cold one.
after ctm's he has not broken a joint yet. and he is sober all day so in a way i guess ctm joints are better than rehab. hey flatty now that i think of it these are gonna be perfect for ya. :flipoff2:

The are not really 1.75, 40 spline, they are only 1.708, maybe you are off by the same factor that 4" = 9":)
My guess is that that the Avalanche "Engineering" yokes will split first.
Flatty 01-22-2002, 11:50 AM Well the axle I am getting already has the Warn inners and outers, so the CTM would be the next logical step. If I am tearing into the thing I might as well make it as strong as possible. As for being the trail drunk, well..... I can't let that one go, I mean I am proud of that, it has taken me years of work and practice to get there.

actually i think the are 1.710 but thats besides the point and yes the yokes are supposed to break before the shaft. thats why we are making them from 4340 instead of 300m. trying to save the axle splines. better to have one part fail completly than have every thing fail partly.
colech 01-22-2002, 12:49 PM I am compelled to buy CTM... I feel the force drawing me in... I can't help myself... I neeeeed... I waaaannnt... ahhhhhh!
I also called Jack and truly believe that we have a savior afterall. By the way CAMO what housing do you have your 40 splines in, that's hurculine!

Okay, is 300M that much better then 4340 or are we just pissing away money for the presitige of saying it is 300M. I know one major Axle manufacturer uses it only for axles that have a smaller cross section, other than that he uses 4340. So what is the verdict?:flipoff2:
Shadow man 01-22-2002, 11:26 PM Hey Donovan. You thinking about making some up? I been thru 3 broken axles since you made me those flanges. The axles break about 6 inches from the yokes now!:(

I am glad the drive flanges are working for you and if it came down to building new shafts I bet that we could do it.
tera housings. as far as 300m being better suited for axles i am not a engineer but some where a engineer decided that it was a better material and that is why it is used for aircraft landing gear and probally every axle and torsion bar in off road racing.
actually the prestige of 300m axles is not in saying you have them but in being able to laugh at guys that do not have them after their "alloy" axles explode. :flipoff2:

300M is about 25% stronger than 4340 (assuming we heat treat correctly) and in many cases it is overkill and just used for the prestige of 300M, in many cases these parts can be made of 4340 if they were designed properly. This is very similar to the 4130 vs. mild steel debate. The material cost of 300M is about twice the price of 4340, in many cases the manufacturing costs are much greater than the material costs so the price of 300M parts are not that much higher.
overkill....whats that? :flipoff2:
Shadow man 01-23-2002, 09:28 AM I NEED overkill!:flipoff2: I'm tired of killing axles!:(
