: Colorado in August
waggoner5 07-13-2004, 02:56 PM Just so everyone knows, there is a large group from 3 different clubs making our 2nd annual trip to Silverton Colorado this year from August 1st- 7th. Everyone is welcome. So far it looks like there are 26 people/trucks coming. We are camped in Silverton at the Red Mountain Motel & RV Park, and if they are booked, there are many other places you can stay. There are motels, great restaurants, and many trails to explore. Nothing will be to difficult for the average Cruiser. Come join us if you can.

dd113 07-13-2004, 05:31 PM Gary, Send me some details. I will be at BHCC and was planning a swing down through CO after it. I wont make the start but I can make the end.
waggoner5 07-13-2004, 05:40 PM David,
There are not many details to pass on other than we will be in Silverton on the night of the 1st and will be there until probably Saturday the 7th. If you want to camp, there will probably be room. We can always make room. Lance Van Tuyle, his brother and I did this last year and had a great time. Between us just talking about it we managed around 15 trucks I think. This year its going to almost double that. Next year who knows.
I have been doing it since 88 and plan on doing it about the same time every year until I can't stand it anymore. Maybe it will turn into an event. We have even talked about moving this annual trip around the state in different locations for the future. I have done this with the Pinzgauer guys and had a great time.
Hope to see you there.
Gary

romer 07-13-2004, 06:51 PM For us Colorado folks who may want to come up for the day on the weekend, how would we link up with you
waggoner5 07-13-2004, 08:17 PM I would say to come by the campground around 9:00 AM or after about 4:00 PM.
Some or all of us will be hanging around. I will plan to check in at the office daily for messages. Hope you make it.

Probably the best way would be to call the Red Mountain campground and speak with Amy. I'm sure she could track either Gary, or me down. Cell phone coverage is sporadic at this location, so land lines are the best way to communicate. Probably most of us will arrive Sunday afternoon (8/1), and get camp spots set up. Some people will get there early, and will definately be running trails Sunday afternoon. The big group runs will occur Monday-Friday, with a day set aside for doing the tourist type stuff with the family members, doing vehicle maintenance/repairs, etc. The way I envision this year is to keep most of the runs limited to 5-7 vehicles, that way it doesn't crowd the trails, and keep things moving. But that's not exactly set in stone - I'll discuss this with Gary.
Most of us will depart on Saturday (8/7), to return home. We've got people coming as far away as Austin, Indiana, Chicago, and now Atlanta with David swinging by!

romer 07-13-2004, 08:30 PM Sunday would probably be the only day I could make it. Have to see what the Mrs. has planned for me. What time Sunday do you think you would be there? Where is this campground? Do you have a number for Amy?
Thanks,
Ken

Ken, click the link http://www.redmtmotelrvpk.com/ (http://) and it's got the address of the campground as well as their 800 phone number. The campground is situated on the very south side of town as you drive down main street. Silverton is a real small town, and you can't miss it.
We'll probably get in too late to do any wheeling Sunday. We plan on arriving there around 2:00pm. There will be some guys getting there early, however, so if you decide to come down, you could probably link up with someone. If you could take a day off (Monday), you'll get to meet most of the group, and do a good day long trail with us.

romer 07-14-2004, 06:11 AM Don't know that I could get off work. I would have had to come down sat night and probably would have stayed in Montrose or Gunison over night and then I would have had to leave about 3PM to get back to Denver Sunday night. I'll let you know if things shape up so that I can go. If you do this every year, I will try and link up with you next year if I can't make it.
Pretty country around there. I haven't done it be a friend of mine told me there is an old mining road from Silverton to Ouray that is spectacular. Is that one of the runs you do?
Ken

Gary,
If you get a chance to go over Cinnamon Pass into Lake City it is well worth it. Again, nothing difficult, but very scenic. I was just there three weekends ago and there was still a little snow on the passes. They're all open.
Have fun!

Not sure which days we're doing what trails, but Imogene, Engineer, Cinnamon, Black Bear, and other passes are all on the list AFIK.
It'll be a super time no matter what do you come or trail you go on!
