: Emergancy Clean-up at Spider

Our club (Dysfunctional Rockcrawlers) have decided to have an emergancy clean-up day at Spider Lake on Saturday, August 7th. We would like to work with FOTR on this and need your support to pull it off. This will be a one day work party, no raffle, no party, just hard, nasty work!

Here's our plan:

*Camp at Ellis Creek Friday night

*make our way to Spider to arrive around 8:00am.

*assemble on the slab's near Pirate camp (if still allowed:rolleyes:)

*pass out garbage bags and plastic gloves and pick up every last piece of tp, trash, etc we can find

*haul it out in a trailer that afternoon and camp at Ellis or Loon Sat night

It's time to step up people! We're not going to stand around while we have our access taken away! We don't need hordes of people. Just a few really dedicated, hard working individuals interested in keeping the trail open;)

Can we count on your support?

It looks like we will be there 3-4 trucks strong (80% chance based on if rigs are ready :shaking: ), and if so we will be happy to do anything to assist you guys with hard, nasty work :barf:.

is there some kind a chemical that is natural or organic that could be put on the nasty spots or on any pile that can't be picked up that would help disolve or at least disinfect the spot???

One thing that must be addressed is where we can legally dispose of the waste? Anyone have any ideas? Maybe the RV dump station on Ice House road?

I think depending on the commitment there should be a group that heads off to the buck area as well, If the forest service has focused on spider , I am sure buck and ellise are on the radar screen.

I would say start at buck and work your way to spider.

By the end of this week, I will have in my hand a letter of permission form the Powers that be, for this clean up (remember the area is closed). The county and FS are excited that FOTR has jumped on this so quickly.

I alos have a sponsor (to be named later) that will be helping with overhead for this clean up, to the tune of $1000.00

That should afford us a way to dispose of the collected samples, unless the FS or county have other ideas (which I'll check on).

Please remember that we still have a work party and trail patrol needs for this weekend.

Thanks

I'm part of the Dysfunctional crew and will be supplying anybody that wants one a 30 gallon HDPE drum with a positive lock lid. These will be perfect for hauling out this type of waste and there will be little chance of a spill in the back of your rig.

Emergency Turd Patrol! Way to step up!!! :D

I wish I could be there, but I can't (haven't been up there at all this year). :(

BTW, it sounds like they're going to let you guys into the Pirate camp area for this event, but if not, on the closure area map it looks like you could still legally park and group up on the slabs on the opposite side of the trail. That may be a better idea anyway so that poeple who aren't part of the cleanup don't see all the rigs over there think its OK to head into Spider...

I'd like to see every club or group toting one of these. Optimally, they'd have a Pett (or similar) for their own use, and a big, blue barrel for other folks' leftovers. :(

I'll make a standing offer to provide cut vinyl stickers for each barrel... if someone comes up with single-color art with something witty (pack out yer poo?), I'll cut that, if not, I'll cut some large white FOTR logos for the sides of these barrels.

I've picked up and bagged warm squishies from my 150-pound dog before, and that ain't pleasant, but it ain't all that bad, either. I hope people will pack out their own poo, but until they do, these blue barrels may be the best way for us to 'Keep Tahoe Blue.'

I don't know if it would help but, I work for the local water district in El Dorado County in the Environmental Compliance Dept doing water testing and sampling. I could ask my boss if I can pull samples from Spider Lake and take them to our state certified lab and test for Fecal Coliform(bacteria) and whatever else we need. I can also compare these results to our data on file for Folsom Lake, Slypark Lake and the South Fork of the American to see just what condition the water is in.

Let me know how I can help. ;)

Rich, I just spoke with my boss and he said first thing we should do is get the results from any tests they did on Spider Lake and how many samples they took and where they took them from. This is all public information so they have to give it to us. As well as that they need to give us the standards they have for this type of lake. After we have this info, I can take more samples and get them tested at our lab to determine if the lake is better or worse.

I will try to find out who to contact for this info but if anyone has a contact at the county, please let me know. ;) Thanks

EDIT: I just spoke with Mike and he hasn't seen any results as of yet but should have them within a week. I will call back after a week. He said they took samples before the weekend of the 4th and then again after the weekend of the 4th. I can't wait to see these results. I'm betting part of the problem was all the thunder storms we got stirring up the lake. Hopefully I can get some samples that will negate the ones they took.

I would ask your boss if he could allow a favor and let testing be completed, before researching past sample history and before asking for a ruling on a minimum standard for water quality. The labs recommendation on what water quality standards are usually demanded for a lake surrounded by recreation will also be valuable information, get an unbiased educated opinion on the typical standards for non-potable water lakes (like Spider Lake).

Past experience with water quality issues raised for Surprise Creek (Surprise Canyon Road) reinforces the need to be proactively educated on the water quality and the typical standards applied where the watershed may involve motorized activity and human recreation activity.

You need to know what is the expected standard for the water district having jurisdiction (before someone else lobbies to influence a standard beyond the reasonable expectation).

Happy Trails!

By the way...Disco's Title at EID (Eldorado Irragation District) is "Water Sampler" so you have the right guy. It is his job to collect samples throughout the EID territory and deliver them for testing. If EID will allow testing we would have an independant source of testing. This can only be a good thing. validity to the tests do require multiple tests over time though...Got to start somewhere. Go TIM!!

I've been getting a lot of email and pm's from people offering everything from $$$ to trailers to haul out the trash. I want to thank you all for your support! You are truly Friends of the Rubicon!

Status:

Right now, we're waiting on written permission to access the closed area on foot. Big Rich has taken the lead on this and will be reporting just as soon as he gets the go ahead. We expect to have this sometime next week.

What to bring:

Sunscreen, bug spray, portable toilets, work gloves, shovels, HAND SANITIZER
Our club will provide plastic gloves and trash bags.

Can I donate $$ to the cause?

Hell yeah! If you feel so inclined, please donate to the Friends of the Rubicon (http://www.delalbright.com/Rubicon/donate.htm) . The money you give will go directly toward funding projects like this one. It pays for trail signage, garbage bags, etc. Again, all money donated will go directly to the Rubicon;)

yes, RockyTrail.Com (who also is my partner and runs RubiconTrail.com) is sending us some bulk Poo Powder. This stuff makes the waste NO LONGER waste. It makes it landfill safe (and even dumpster safe and legal). We will have it. Actually, you all will as I am scheduled to be at Sierra Trek that weekend. Mark will run a great cleanup. :)

I would be there if it weren't for Trek, but I will make sure the Poo Powder gets there. Heck, picking up poo is no big deal to me. In my other life I was a fireman/politician kinda guy. I had to eat enough of it I should be able to pick it up! :D

On the serious side, have a station where folks either bring their bags to the Poo Powder guy who dumps in the right amount; or issue zip locks full of powder to all the picker-uppers.

for the stuff that you want to take to the RV dump station, get some buckets or sealable containers, and dump RV blue stuff in with the mix. Let it mix up a bit, and it would be liquid (if you add a little water also) and slide right down the RV dump site (or a few dump sites along the way).

For the poo powder bags, the stuff will end up like foam rubber. But you can't have a ton of paper in with the waste. You'll have to add more than the necessary amount of powder to compensate for extra paper to get complete breakdown. Take the poo powder bags to several different dumpsters or better yet, land fills. Right on the bag it says landfill safe.

Don't skimp on the poo powder when you have paper mixed in tho.
Read about this here: Del's Sanitation Pages (http://www.delalbright.com/Rubicon/sanitation.htm).

thanks to all of you , Del

Maybe designate a poo boss to maintain the big containers as they get filled. Sounds like if we make sure the waste gets layered with water and poo powder we won't need "Bio Hazard" labels on them.

My wife and I are planning on going up there to help. The few of you that I have met probably won't remember me but I have made the trek thru this trail every year for the last 8 years and we love the Rubicon. My wife Renee and I have been to a couple of the FOTR events, that would likely be where we would have met. I was in tears when I was reading the closure threads, and even if we have to drive my street car and hike in to help We'll be there. Hopefully it won't come to that, My Bronco should be 100% by then. I just need to re-seal the t-case on trans.

We would like to camp with the group at Ellis creek, but we will be ariving late because we will be leaving from LA after work that Friday.

I have been in touch with Pete (yellowsub), he's been in England. He is planning on going too.

Thoughts:

Getting the "stuff" up to the rigs from the lakeside campsites at Spyder might be fairly difficult if all work is to be done on foot. It seems from what I have read here that is the direction the permission slip is going to lean. Perhapse we can get permission for 1 ranger escorted truck to go in and collect the barrels?

Has anyone thought about some signage? This is the perfect time to let people that they can make a difference on the con, as some others have already have. How about something like this:

ATTENTION!

In 2004 a section beside this trail was closed to all human access from July 13 to November 10. This closure was the result of an accumulation of "items" left behind by those who didn't realize that they had a major effect on the environment.

Please help us all enjoy this trail, pack out EVERYTHING you bring in to this trail. This includes YOUR human waste.

It is estimated that over 35,000 people pass thru this trail every year. The volume of even a percentage of the humans waste is more than this trail can deal with. Please remove your waste.

I think it needs to be shorter to keep peoples attention, but I think it must outline the facts that leaving a trace already has at least temporarily closed a portion of the trail.

It would be nice to be able to post this near the entrances to the trail, probably require USFS permission though.

My wife is wondering if it would be a good idea to approach some of the Sac. Radio stations about running public service spots.

I've signed up, why haven’t you?

Has anyone thought about some signage? This is the perfect time to let people that they can make a difference on the con, as some others have already have. How about something like this:

ATTENTION!

In 2004 a section beside this trail was closed to all human access from July 13 to November 10. This closure was the result of an accumulation of "items" left behind by those who didn't realize that they had a major effect on the environment.

How about "Keep Spider Blue" in big black bold and an outline of the lake

Not that origonal but people could also put them on their rigs as well.

Edit::::::

"Keep Spider Free of POOO!"

"Don't Dump On Spider"

"Mr. Hankey Says,,, Pack Me Out"

Give a poop. Dont' Pollute.

Just un update. The county has yet to get me any of the results from any testing they had done on Spider. I am still working on it and will hopefully have results by end of business today. As soon as I have the results I will let you all know. ;)

Just a thought............

Crash440 and I are going to get those pooper scoopers that people use to pick up after their dogs. That may be a good idea for those of us who have cranky backs, less bending over :).

I would assume that feed stores would have them.

I've confirmed with Del that the trail is NOT CLOSED that weekend. We can go ahead as planned. This being said, we will make EVERY EFFORT to keep the trail clear for them so that the participants can enjoy their Rubicon Experience;)

Well, I spoke with a rep at the county today and she e-mailed me the results of the samples taken from Spider Lake and surrounding ponds. This is not the reason the area was closed. The results are below any maximum allowable levels. The reason is because of the visible waste around Spider and they are worried about the "Potential" for contamination. This is good news!!!!! After we clea-up the area on August 7th we might be able to make a case for them to open the area. It looks like there will be no need for any further sampling of Spider Lake. :bounce2: :bounce: In other words, Spider in Safe!!!!

Guys, I live half a country from you and can't be there to help, but I wish I could. Land use issues affects all uf us. I wish y'all the best in your efforts to restore and preserve your favorite wheeling areas, as much for yourselves, as for the rest of us that want to see and wheel in your neck of the woods in the future. I wish y'all the best.
