: 78 Bronco 9" rear axle shaft selection... very limited?

D6TZ4234A - To the best of my knowledge, this is the factory part number for the 1978 Bronco 9" rear axle shaft (either side).

Superior's "regular plain old shaft" part number is: PA5390 I assume this is just a worked over factory Ford replacement part?

I can't see that Superior makes that shaft in the "evolution" series, and I can't seem to find any other axle brands with "GOOD" 31 spline alloy shafts for this particular year housing. This is disappointing. One of the shafts went "ping" at the splines last weekend. Those old things were sure to go anyway.

Now I need some new ones... could anyone point me in the right direction? Part numbers would be GREAT... and so would prices and where to find them. And a kitchen sink.

Most places are not going to have a part number, but will want you to measue your axles so they can make them.

I have always been a big fan of currie shafts

I cant imagine Superiors Evo series not being available in your application.I believe the regular Evo axle is basically a stock axle, what your probably looking for is the chromo Evo axles.I know thier available for the 9" in the EB length and about positive theyre available for the fullsize Bronc.Other options are Moser and Yukon, but the chromo Evos are probably the best.

Believe me... I've looked! I can't find a p/n for an Evo shaft that will fit a 78-79 Bronco. They have a "regular" Superior shaft, though. It's not through hardened, though.... but I believe it may be of the same alloy.

If anyone can chime in with a part number that would be great!

So far, the P/Ns that I have for a 78-79 axle shaft (equal length both sides) are:

D6TZ4234A - Ford OEM
PA5390 - Superior's "regular" shaft
YA F900001 - Yukon

A new stock axle will hold up nice in the the 9". Don't forget your using axles that have 100k on them and are 20+ years old.

From hanging around dirt trac and drag racing guys for quite some time, the best rear axle made is by Moser. Dutchman, Superior, ect I've seen explode. In a rear axle application the alloy that moser uses is much stronger then 4340 or 300m. That same alloy also sucks to make a front axle that has ears to hold a u-joint. So the moral of the story is Moser rear axles, 4340 or 300m front.

I think I'll take your advice. Where is a good place to buy a Moser shaft? Does Moser make shafts for the shelf, or am I going to need to have these custom built?

shouldn't a 78-79 bro. use the same rear shaft as any 70's to early 80's F-150? I know there are plenty of people using them.. so the demand is there..

YES it is. It's the same part number, same FACTORY part number, blah blah. The companies usually will say F-150 instead of Bronco. Problem is... it's hard to even find those "F-150" shafts.

I think I'm just going to order a pair of Superior "regular" shafts for $100 each. They use the same alloy as the Evolution shafts, still get rolled splines, just not the secondary heat treatment and other pampering that the Evolution axles get.

JayDee, sorry i didn't see your post earlier.

Our PA5390 is going to be one hell of a shaft for you. 2 year warranty. Made from 1541H, rolled splines and induction hardened. Contact some of the vendors on the board. Allot of the guy's are having great deals right now. Run a search to find them.

If you have any questions at all PM me or post them here. I am off to Jeepers Jamboree tomorrow night so I might not get back to you until Sunday or Monday.

Thanks for your product support.

Isn't 1541H, induction hardened the same as any stock dana shaft?

Broncorob, yes I think it pretty much is. This is supposed to be their "stock replacement" axle.

I would imagine that either way, it's going to be stronger than the almost 30 year old axles that are in there currently.

I agree with you JayDee. A stock replacement is alot better than a 30 year old axle. The comment by Mike that I don't really like is "Our PA5390 is going to be one hell of a shaft for you". This gives the feeling that the axle is better than stock when it's really the same as a new stock axle. Does the warranty cover any breakage or is it against "manufacturer defects" because that type of warranty is usually pretty useless. I don't think anybody is worried about Superior putting out crappy quality, but don't just throw out "2 year warranty" without telling what is covered.

Mike, I'm not bagging on Superior at all. I consider them the premier axle manufacturer right now. If I could afford them I'd have the new chro-moly shafts in the front of my comp buggy. I just want to make sure everybody is on the same page

Well considering I just bought a pair of them for $130.00, I'm not going to complain too bad if they break. :)

What exactly did you get? I am in the process of putting a '74 Bronco's 44 and 9" in my YJ.

It is a pain to find shafts, lockers for these things... a link or two would be nice. (besides Bronco graveyard and completeoffroad.com)

For the 9" go with the WARN full floater kit. If you do break a rear axle, just pull it out and keep on going. That is as long as you have a rear locker. Also, with the full floater kit, it takes the wieght of the vehicle off the rear axles and onto the hubs. Less chances braking.

just my .03 though.

With the full floater... and I am able to run an ARB.. I see you are running a Detriot so I am guessing yes. I am kinda new to the 'full floater sceen'. I will definetly start looking into this more. Thanks for the input.

The full floater for the rear is the best option. Cost a little more but overall I think it doesn't get better. For the front I have heard the Superior axles and better then the rest. Yukon axles are faulty and just as good as Spicer axles. I went with Warns and CTMs. I have run into some people and they are very happy with this combination. Which in total is a little more then the superior axles alone.

Anyway, just my .03
