: the mysterious yukon gear vs superior gear

Ok, I can't seem to get a straight answer from Randy's Ring and Pinion. I've talked to a few people and they tell me that yukon gears are the highest quality aftermarket gear available, but they can't confirm where they are made. I've searched around the bb, and people have said they've gotten us gear, and they're gotten made in india pos. thus, some people say they're good and some people say they're crap.

Drivetraindirect sells superior gear. After searching around, it doesn't seem like anyone has anything bad to say about them, but not as many people run them. Those are made in Italy.

I know there have plenty of threads on this same topic, but I guess at this point I'm looking for some reassurance one way or the other. Any other gear suppliers I should check with? I don't beat on my truck too hard, and I've got a mechanic helping me do the install. What do you guys think, can I go wrong either way?

Superiors, I run them in both Jeeps. Good stuff. I also recommend Dana gears for dana axles.

I have not broke Yukon gears. I will say the shim packs they supply in the setup kits are a PITA. All 4 setup kits I purchased did not have shims under .005". I had to build a new pack for each move.

I did break a Superior D30 4.88 ring gear a while back. I was running 35" tires, low gearing, locked with a V8.

Good Luck

I agree with beat95yj the spicers are the best for the dana axles never had any problem setting them up. The superiors are a really good gear and I have never had a problem with the set up on them also, and never seen any breakage under normal use. Just for the record I have set up close to a thousand gears over the last 25-30 years.

I have a set of yukon gears in the front and rear.. they set up just like any other.. the kit I had from the supplier had everything I neded.. to do the set up.. I have broke a superior and another brand from central 4 wheel ..
both I couldent get set up right.. the shim pack didnt have enough of the right shims.. to get the backlash down low enough..
other than that
I have had good luck so far with the yukon

have you talked to peak empire about the gears??
talk to ted.. and he can tell you the location of the manufacture..lol

tell him mike sent ya..lol

I was told by one of the venders on PBB that Dana makes the D44 reverse cut gears for both Yukon and Precision, the only difference was the price. The Yukon was considerably cheaper.

yep that is true.. but the yukon is not the lowest grade either.. if you go to the peak empire page there is a store on line to order the gears..

the site is

I bought mine through Drive Train Direct and got Precision Gear's They seemed fine (I'm not too experienced setting up gears) The friend who installed them for me noted that they had been set up and ran at the factory with lapping compound to help get them fitting good. Maybe thats normal but he seemed surprized.

My only problem was some pretty crappy service from DTD that I am still working through (I ordered a custom lenght front shaft June 8th and it's still not here! I am waiting to see how they try to make it right before I unload about the whole thing)

It was 6" shorter than stock. I was on the phone within 3 weeks and then ever since I have been getting the "it will ship tomorrow" crap. What really has me pissed is that every time (4) that they have told me it was going to be picked up or was on hand to ship and then found out it actually wasn't, not one out of the four times did they have the deciency to call me and tell me. They just let me sit there thinking it was in the mail and several days go by until I figure it should have been there before I call and ask WTF. E real business wuold call and tell you they had a problem. I wrote a novel about it in Gen tech so I don't need to take up space here too.

My D44 4.88 yukons had the spicer stamp on them. You never can tell, but I havent heard anything bad so far. Plus, they were a hell of a lot cheaper than spicer.

I was told by a tech at RR&P that US Gear comes in a Yukon box and if they were from India they came in a value line box but I don't know what they look like.

How can you tell a quality gear set form a inferior one?

1. Material used and quality of material
2. Final finish of the hobbing of the gear
3. Pinion relief (pretty std stuff here, basic gear technology)
4. Reliefs and proper chamfers on the ring gear
5. Proper hardness (based on material type used)

I am willing to bet that the material used by all is a std 8600 series steel that is heat treated and then oxidized in some way. Gears have been around a long time and the science is standard behind them. It used to be copper coating was used as a coating to set up the proper wear pattern in early ring and pinions. Quality gear sets today will have certian manufacured facts like material certification and hardness certification. The only major difference that I can see from a yukon to any other gear would be the above

no such product as yukon gears, it is a marketing ploy invented by randy to sell gears. all gears that come in a yukon gear box are somebody elses gears packaged for randys. inside information from a sales person that works at randys.
