: 78-79 Bronco Rear end 9" Question
NOTPRETTY 07-15-2004, 02:50 PM I know the EB, but don't know the 78-79's. I am looking for spare parts in a wrecking yard and found a 78 Bronco. Complete axles front and rear.
Is the rear end 31/28 spline?...Always? And i can turn the pinion and count the revolution to guess the ratio, but does anyone know a quick way to identify 4:11 gears. Any tricks?
Will the yoke fit/work with my EB 9"?
Are the Disc Brakes a direct swap for the later years of the EB that came with disc?
Is either the long side or short side front shafts useful as spares? Cut downable...I know they are not the same size.
Thanks
Marlon
ImNotRight 07-15-2004, 02:58 PM rear end is always 31 spline.
AFAIK 9" pinion is a 9" pinion is a 9" pinion..
vast majority of these are 3.50 gears.
i think the front short side is the same (remembering something about a chop saw and like 5/8" being cut off?) don't know much else bout the front.
TurdBronco 07-15-2004, 07:35 PM I had a 28 spline that came out of a 78 bronco. Wasnt too happy aboot it either.

31-spliners have 2 notches (ears?) on the outside end of the axle. They are inside the circle opposite each other and point inward to the center of the lug pattern.

Really? Never,ever run into that before..Thats ford, I suppose..:shaking:
kwspony 07-17-2004, 08:52 PM the short side should be the same, the long side needs to be cut down. As far as I know the disc brakes from 76 to 79 should be the same, 5 bolt spindles and all.
Not sure if I am misreading the original post or not, but the 9" on '66-'79 Broncs never came with discs.

Could have been swapped in, but who could know for sure?
4byford 07-27-2004, 12:05 AM Discs will swap to EB 44s; rear shafts should be 31 spline; and the front shafts have 297 U joints and can be cut down as mentioned above.
The yoke is different on the 79 at least- maybe both years. However, there is a Ujoint that is readily available that adapts between the yoke and std driveline, one cross is slightly longer than the other.
Lonestar_Bronco 07-27-2004, 07:55 AM If the Bronco was a "trailer special", it most likely has 4.11 gears. Mine did/does.

Yes, the yoke is different (1330 versus 1310), but the pinion shaft is the same.
jopes 07-27-2004, 10:49 AM 78's had 1310 pinion yokes
79's had 1330 pinion yokes
this can also be thrown off around the time of the 78's ending production and the 79's starting. ford liked to use up stock left in the bins before starting the new years vechiles
WhiskeyTango 07-27-2004, 11:28 AM Clean off all the grime on the ID tag and you should be able to find the gear ratio on it unless someone threw it away. On my 78 F150 I would have to use different caps so my driveline would work than if I got the Ujoint from Kragen for a 78F150, I think the yoke was blown out and replaced sometime before I had it.
Anyone know the Part Number on that Ujouint with different size crosses??
