I'm trying to connect my 91 5.0 to a c4 auto. I finally have the correct flexplate and torque converter but now I think I may have the wrong belhousing. The thin metal plate that goes between the engine and belhousing matches all the bolt holes in the belhousing except the ones for the starter. I thought I heard someone at one point say that there and two c4 belhousings with different starter locations. (btw the thin metal plate is the one for the 5.0). So do I need a new belhousing or a new metal plate or what? Thanks.

Are you saying the holes for the starter won't line up or that the starter is in the wrong location?

Maybe you have a C-4 out of a 260 or you have the backing plate on backwards. As far as the 5.0 to the C-4 it should be a direct bolt in (aside from the flexplate because the balance is different on the post '79 302's)

The holes don't line up. I can bolt the starter directly to the bellhousing with no problem (not sure if it will function this way though). But the holes in the thin metal plate don't line up with the holes for the starter in the bellhousing. But the rest of the mounting holes line up fine. Can I just ditch the metal plate all together and just bolt the bellhousing directly to the block?

sounds like a 157 tooth backing plate, on a 164 tooth bellhousing or vice versa.

Everything is set up for 157 tooth. I don't know what the bellhousing is however, had it laying around. Is there a particular one that I need?

yes, the 157 tooth bellhousing is different.
I'm pretty sure the mustangII's used a 157 tooth setup.

So is that what I need a bellhousing from, a mustang II?

sounds like you got the 157 housing cause the 5.0 plate dont work. cut the plate where the starter is and use a correct shim if you have to and bolt the m2 staarter in....
