I don't like how it looks either, but it could be used to slide the diff up over a rock that you are just barely unable to drive over. Could be worth it for some people. Maybe I'll get one so I can tell people I love my buttface. :)

Interesting approach.
I think it needs more bracing.

I feel in the long run it's going to bend the cover severely out on the trail and cause problems, (oil out, dirt/mud/water in).

Looks like a good concept, just needs more reinforcement.

So talk to somebody who has done it and beaten on it and hasn't had any problems before you talk out of your ass...

Nothing wrong with mounting off the diff cover. It's a lot of bolts and seems to take the stress really well. I have BEAT on mine, and had no issues.

What's all this hating on mounting rams to the diff cover? Is it just this buttface thing? Do folks think there is too much leverage on the diff cover bolts? I have my ram mounted to the diff cover, albeit MUCH closer, and i have had ZERO problems...

Like I said.... we'll see how it does.

I searched this board and a kajillion other places for ideas and have seen some just flat out crazy ram mounting... this one didn't seem too unreasonable and I've seen it work on some other rigs. Besides... reputable kits like photo below... with much smaller mounting points hold up... that diff cover I got ain't gonna be hurtin'... but what do I know... I can't drive worth a damn... and sure don't profess to be any kind of an engineer.... I'm a damn bean-counter that fourwheels and brews beer... it's an ugly combo!

The only problem I see with it would be mounting a 2" ram on a thin cover. It might want to tear the tabs off if the steering was put in a bind.

When I first saw the thing, all I could say was "that thing is ugly!". But the more I look at at and think about it I think it's got some potential. I'm thinking about setting up something like that when I shave my Toy diffs. I'd use half of a weld-on cap like has been done a million times before and then modify the "buttface" design by welding flat steel to the surface of the two "fangs" to give a better sliding surface.

I like, I like. :D

I wheel with Russ quite a bit.

He does amazing things with a "stock configuration" 4 cylinder TJ. The butface is cool for "small tire" guys (like me, although I don't own one) who have a tendency to skid their diff's over rocks. It doesn't go as crazy as some around here do on ring gear protection, but it does allow you to slide the diff over rocks.

Both Russ and I have beat the crap out of those things. The only damage is the lower "vanes" look slightly crooked, but nothing has ever leaked or broken. I also had my doubts on this idea, but after seeing Russ use it for a long time and really put it to the test, I was next to put one on my Jeep. I have tried very hard to break it and haven't been able to. About a year ago I still had stock TJ upper front arms on my Jeep, I hit that Buttface thing hard enough to bend the upper arms against the frame rails, then eventually rip them in half. The Buttface never complained a bit. It does make a nice ramp as mentioned before, and is useful. They have also been known to split softer rocks. :)

thump93yj
04-28-2003, 11:21 AM
We ran pretty hard this weekend up in Clayton... took the Mother-in-Law version of the Baertrax Buttface on Limp Pine first thing with Russ himself. It did fine. You smack rocks all day on that trail and it slid over them just fine. (Steep and off-camber all the way). I just need to add some protection under the rest of the ram to finish out this project.

The nay-sayers are funny... most of the ram assist kits I looked at come with small steel tabs to weld on as mounting points. This diff cover is the heavier 44 version with 1/4 inch steel plate welded across it with the added tab which I believe is 5/16 for the ram mount. It's stout. It's securely bolted down to a cast surface with 10 machine bolts... while it might happen... I seriously doubt I'm gonna "rip" the cover off! I got other more likely issues... like d44 knuckles being blown off in a pinch. For comparison... Woody turned his AGR cylinder into a pretzel on TSOB. His Buttface held... the ram didn't... I think that ram was a bit small for what he's running though... D60 with 39-15 TSLs. He's chucking it and putting on a 2" cylinder.

We put it to the test on Hoegaarden, Staircase, TSOB as well. All good. I twisted a front drive shaft and busted a hub the last day on staircase.

For those interested in the technical aspect of this project verses the "fugly-ness".... I'm running a 93YJ, stock 4.0, AX15 5spd, Dana300 4:1 twin stick, d60 35spline spooled, scout d44 detroit, 4.56, SOA, 38.5-14.5 TSL-SX.

oh and :flipoff2: -cheers!

I know I am a nebi but I will post my opinion, Like it counts:flipoff2: Looks like an effective product but the only downfall would be the bolts like some have said and it would come from some idiot tightening the bolts down to tight or to loose causing the bolts to be able to sheer or rip off. Other then that it gives me an idea.
