I pulled my original 3spd/TC last night and it's about half the size of the new sm465/TC replacement.

In order to retain the original 3spd BH, it looks like I only need to reduce the OD of the sm465 front bearing retainer?

Is this right?

I think I have everything else, here's my list:

TO bearing sleeve for Toyota bearing (classic cruisers)
Special PilotB for 1F crank-TO-sm465 (classic cruisers)
sm465/classic Adapter plate/split case from Ed (Vortec_Cruiser)
3spd cruiser BH (original)
3spd cruiser PPlate (Sierra Toyota - John Hocker)
rear Xmember on order (thanks Jeremiah - Proffitt's)
need some replacement DShafts, as the new TC is a split-type w/different bolt pattern from earlier 3spd unit.
11" clutch disc from my budy Georg (orange45)

Simon,
Do you know If I can just reduce the OD on the stock unit?

Sorry I didn't swing by when I was down in LA (alta loma), It would have been nice to meet you and checkout our shop.

next time,

uh your putting a splitcase behind a SM465? I thought all 465's were 10 spline,.. You changing to a custom output shaft that's 19spline to go to a split case? or are you confused and calling a tcase a split case when it is not a real split case? Split cases came in later 40's, all fj60's and fj62's.. were all 19spline inputs. 3spd and 4spd cases can be adapted to 465's but not a true split case unless you put in a spudshaft style adapter not a plate style.

The tranny/adapter/transfer-case came from Vortec_Cruiser:

The adapter is a plate-type...does a 1977 40 have a split case?

re-read vortecs post . He put in a NV4500 and a split case , and took out the 465 ans 3 spd case . you are gettin a 3 spd case. cool cause it may be lower geared than the one that was in there.

Thanks for clarifying.

How about my Q on reducing the 465 FRT bearing retainer OD size?

Looking forward to better gearing and no more crazy 3spd wine,

yes , your idea is correct and use allen head bolts. if you check Morgan Fletchers website he has build pics of when he and Mudrack did his 465 , 208 doubler , stock t-case build up. and he has a very , very good pic of the finished piece cut down and installed on front of tranny with allen head bolts.
