: Anyone bend 1.75" .120 wall DOM with a Harbor Freight bender?
pmurf1 01-22-2002, 08:13 PM Title pretty much says it all. What were the results with the high tensile strength of DOM vs. pipe (40k to 100k psi/inch if I remember right)? The pipe's OD is 1.9", DOM's should be 1.87" right?
Let me have your thoughts.
Bones 01-22-2002, 08:15 PM My friend tried it w/2" last Friday, and it kinked real bad. He's not sure what he's going to do to make a bumper now. :(
pmurf1 01-22-2002, 08:26 PM Your friend was using DOM tubing to make bumpers? Or was he using 2" PIPE? Two different things completely.
1.5" pipe is the most common size for sliders and bumpers, etc. 2" looks to Texas to me for bumpers.
Bones 01-22-2002, 08:44 PM 2" DOM, and yes, he's planning on using smaller next try
SonoraBob 01-22-2002, 08:59 PM OK, I hate to bring this up AGAIN, but why DOM?
Having a concentric tube is very important when making bumpers I know, but other cheaper and better materials are available. http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/biggrin3.gif
BossBuilt 01-22-2002, 09:07 PM Which Bender ...they have two.....the one with the Jack and the one you pull the tube through a die roller & setup.

I have the one with the jack for $70~. Not sure if that's what pmurf1 is talking about?
Scout Dude 01-23-2002, 07:37 AM The ~$70 HF bender will not bend TUBE Correctly. It will kink and dent it. Use PIPE in the HF PIPE bender and TUBE in a TUBE bender.....;)
pmurf1 01-23-2002, 07:42 AM The one with the 12 ton jack and 6 dies is what I'm referring to. The one with the stand and dies is for flat and square tube.
Bones, when you were trying to build the bumper, where did you set the two rollers? With 1.5" and bigger pipe, I use the top or next to top hole so I don't bend it. In other words, I pretty much use the 5th hole from the bottom when I do 1.5", top hole if I was doing 2". Is this where you guys set the rollers, or did you try to make a tighter bend? Or was it just that the tensile strength of the DOM made it impossible to bend clean?
Bob/Ca, I agree on the using pipe for bumpers and sliders, etc. Schedule 80 is .200 wall and bends like a dream for $44/21' stick. It has a higher tensile strength than schedule 40 by 12k psi, but no where near DOM for strength and weight.
Anyone else tried it?
Cryslr 01-23-2002, 07:46 AM Yeah the harbour Frieght kinker is more like when your using anything but S 40 or thicker PIPE.

I believe it was set at the second one from the top, and yes the bend he was attempting was a pretty tight one to wrap around the fender. It was the "cherry popper" for the bender and either of use ever touching one too, so that probably played a big roll in it.
Did you see Yogi's front bumper? He used a HF special, and looks good to me? If he's in your area, he'd probably have a few tips?
JackA 01-23-2002, 10:22 AM So are you finally realizing that pipe is for plumbers and tube is for fabricators? :flipoff2:
We are running Anaconda on Saturday. I will give you a call.

So tell me, is it OK to use 1010 ERW tube and it's not OK to use A53 pipe for "fabricators"? WHY?
Unless you need to have a strong "structure" that is also comparibly light weight, or need precise OD & ID dimensions, there is no reason you can't use pipe.
GloNDark 01-23-2002, 02:16 PM We tried bending 120 wall 1 3/4" tubing in the $70 harbor freight bender. And to answer it quick. IT SUCKED!!! Kink the holy shit out of the tube. Tried each of the "roller settings" with the similar results in all. At worst it kinks like mad and one very "open" bends it flattens the outside of the tubing, and was crush very easily.
:( Bummer!! Oh well, JD bender is on the way.
BossBuilt 01-23-2002, 06:14 PM Hmmm...anybody watch motorcycle mania on the discovery channel?
I thought it was interesting how Jesse James (the custom bike builder) did his tube bending.....
His tools consisted of a rose bud, A stout table, some clamps and a couple chunks of wood (one with the intended arc as his jig).
I tell yah.... I think I'm going to try it.:)

spudwrench 01-23-2002, 08:52 PM the HF pipe bender is best left to pipe. i even filled some tube with sand and welded the ends shut, and it still sucked. the other day i used it to bend some 1.25" solid rod. worked well till the jack started coming out the bottom. had to weld it all down to some plate steel.
