: Newbie needs Help! 4x4 Help......continued
Martimus93YJ 01-22-2002, 09:32 PM LOL at you guy's attempt to flame me after the fact on that last post...nice try though Mo. It's kinda like tellin someone you love them though, it's just not the same if someone has to tell you to!
But all Joking aside, I do have an update/another newbie question on my 4x4 Problem. I took your all advice. and here is what happened:
Withamc suggested that I jack up each front tire off the ground, and with Jeep turned off and in 4WD, to try rotating the tire by hand and see if it would spin more than an inch or so...........both wheels freewheeled. I tried them both separately (only one wheel off ground at a time) just to be sure. It seemed especially odd that the driver's side freewheeled, as i thought it would be engaged regardless of vacuum switch (from hell). I checked 2WD with same test and they freewheeled as well.
I was on lunch break and running out of time with my work's nice floor jack, so I called the Jeep shop for some quick advice. He suggested that I jack the entire front end up, with Jeep in 4wd and turned off, chock tires (another work freebie), and crawl under and see if I could spin the driveshaft by hand and if i could, to see what tires it spun. Neither in 2wd or 4wd would the driveshaft spin by hand.... it would only spin a tiny bit from side to side......like 1/4" maybe. I have NO IDEA what this means, and had hung up with him and had to hurry back from my break right after i got these results.
I also took CrazyCraig's advice from previous post and, with the front tires ON the ground, tested to see if the front drive shaft would spin when turned by hand. It wouldn't spin in 2wd or in 4wd..???
I checked the plug-ins for the vacuum lines out pretty well and they appear to be in decent shape, however, i have not yet checked to see if I have vacuum by disconnecting them with engine running, etc.(no time) but can/will.
I forgot to check to see if the freewheeling tires in the first test I did were spinning the front driveshaft (DOH- I was in a hurry), so I will repeat this tommorow and report back with the results.
Any ideas what all this adds up to?
thanks for any help,
Newbie
PS: I was checkin out some old post here and although i am a newbie with newbish questions, mine is not nearly as flameworthy as some of the past posts. My favorite has to be the guy that wanted to know what his Jeep would do on the 1/4mile....

Were you putting enough muscle into it? If you've never turned a driveshaft before (especially with the front axles and wheels turning), you might be suprised how much grunt you need to put in.
erikrs301 01-23-2002, 10:02 AM Your vacuum is shot. Pop the four bolts off the motor on the axle and see if it has slid into place with 4WD engaged. If it's still in the 2WD position, to the right, it's not working. Just replace the thing with a 4x4 Posi Lok or rig it to be engaged at all times by on of the following:
-Tack weld the collar in place in the inner axle stub. Don't weld the ottuer because you'll never get it out again to change u-joints or whatever else.
-Put the fork in place manually, re-install and cap the vavle on the diaphragm with rubber vacuum caps
-Pack the shaft inside the motor with washers wo keep the fork in place.
You may also want to replace you fork with one from an XJ, like a '90, they are apparently stronger. If you want to do away with the vacuum altogether, get shafts from a TJ, convert the joints to 297's and make a cover for where the vacuum motor mounts to the axle.
