i have a knuckle to knuckle tie rod (HP dana 44) with 3/4 heims bolted to the knuckle. would it be bad to run a longer bolt and bolt the ram on top of the knuckle with the same bolt as the tie rod?the other end would be attached to the axle housing.. i've done alot of research and haven't really come across this. seams like it would be fine to me, but maybe i'm not seeing something.... btw it is ram assist, not full hydro....i can maybe fit it in another place, but it would fit alot better if i do it this way... TIA :D

You want to bolt a hydraulic ram in single shear on the same attachment point as your tie rod. You are gonna put a lot of leverage on that bolt, especially if the tire is jammed against a rock. Doesn't seem like a good idea to me, unless you are a resident of West Virginia or Oklahoma.

kind of what i was thinking, i was gonna make it double shear at least :)

seen full hydro rigs run it that way. I plan to do the same

With a decent double shear it should be fine.

Why not attach to the tie rod? Easy and proven.

seems like more leverage on the knuckle easier to turn tires more power.

Have seen it done many times, just sandwich the knuckle with the tye rod and ram, ram on top and tye rod under. :D

attaching it to the tierod will give you the same turning power, just less leverage on the bolt.

what about instead of putting a heim on top the knuckle, u get a peice for the ram that'll slip over the knuckle. kinda shaped like a u with the holes out near the end for a pin or something to go into, i cant remember the name though. then just put the heim above that setup and the bolt all the way through. itd put the bolt in double shear. understand what im saying?

what about just attaching the ram to the tierod like everyone else does?
thereby eliminating the worries of double-shear, leverage, etc...
edit: it just seems easier, and with less worry this way. :grinpimp:

hey, i thought this post died :) i ended up mounting it to the tie rod. the problem was i had no room to mount it to the tie rod, so going to the knuckle seemed like another way. i went from a 2 inch ram to a 1 3/4 with smaller ends to make it fit and went to the tie rod........ ....
