Scout Dude 01-23-2002, 10:38 AM Okay, it's amazing how pissed my laptop was when you don't shut it off for 2-3 weeks...I restarted and it finally realized that my Fawking camera WAS HOOKED UP:mad: . But I digress...
Anyway, I haven't been able to get too much done, but My rough spring hangers are cut out and posted on my Webshots account.
Pics are here... (http://community.webshots.com/album/29653576dHGkEAAfVH)
Patrik 01-23-2002, 10:47 AM Truck looks gr8, but yor old front spring mounts looked a bit scary...
Will you connect the new fron spring mounts (towers)together like this:

or just weld them in separately?
Cliffy [JD] 01-23-2002, 10:53 AM Yeah I like those spring hangers, I'm still not sure if I'm gonna do a SR or not, I think I'm gonna leave it (the suspension) stock and see how I like it. I've never driven a vehicle with the shackles in front.:mad2: :mad3: :nuke:
Scout Dude 01-23-2002, 11:35 AM Yeah, my first attempt sucked...I had a guy here bend up some 3/8" x 2 plate to form the hangers and then welded (and bolted) to the some 3"x2" x1/4" thick rec tube. If you notice, they angled back just a bit. They were straight before I wheeled them...real scary.
Yes, my new hangers will have something braced in the middle like last time. I just don't know what yet..gotta fit my winch in there somewhere...
tsm1mt 01-23-2002, 11:52 AM I kinda like it. Not as "slick" looking as some of the designs I've seen, but I kinda prefer the form-follows-function look anyhow. :D Can't say box tubing is weak..

(Looks like my attempt to embed the images failed.. d'oh..)
What are you using for cuttin' tools to rip the box tubing? They look rather clean.
I spent an hour or two last night getting my old D44 housing acquainted with my Chop Saw and got the short side tube cut out. :)
Sawzalling stuff takes a while and my Milwaukee SuperSawzall has everything BUT a trigger lock.. and I still haven't invested in a torch.
Stout box tubing and plenty of surface area for the welds.. probably won't even need to gusset the mount, though it wouldn't hurt just to make sure it doesn't slide back on the frame.. *ever* :D

Having a tube bender has indirectly helped :D. I traded some bent tube for the use of a plasma cutter. I also use a 14" chop saw but I killed it last night:mad3: . It ate at least one of the brushes. I need to see if the damage is permanent or not.
As for the mounts...I was thinking of bolting them in with sleeves inside the frame and then welding them also. I don't think that they would go anywhere then.
1 last thing..How did you get the pics to link up? Most of the time I try, they don't work.

My saw was making funny smells late last night.. but I don't know if that's just the smell the blade makes after chewing through oil-soaked cast iron for an hour or what. Motor wasn't hot..
After I came in from the garage I went to take some bolts out of my coat pocket and pulled out a handful of iron shavings.. d'oh.. that's when I realized it was time to wash my coat again. ;)
I'd like a plasma cutter.. I have two local friends with 'em, but then I have to work around their schedules, which usually don't include wrenching at 1am..

I like bolting and welding. I got lazy on my front shock hoops and didn't bolt each part in place.. sure enough, 2 years later I broke the welds and tore the frame..

I just viewed the images and copied their location in..

OUCH! That sux about the shock hoops...if you notice, in the one pic that you posted, I created a frame wowy too. The old spring mount just wouldn't give up without taking a piece with it. I have to patch that too.
As for the pics..that's the same thing I do...and it has only worked a few times...O-Well, that's what I get for not paying the $$ for a Star:(

Funny thing is.. I had drilled the mounts so they could be bolted on. Put 'em in the drill press before I mounted the hoop up to the rig.. but IIRC, I didn't have a long enough 7/16" drill bit to go through the 1.5" tubing, 1/4" plate, outboard side of the frame and still punch through the inboard side, so I figured the welds would hold.. and they did, for a couple years of abuse. :)
Had a heck of a time trying to get everything back "just so".. and probably bought a longer drill bit. :D

I just added another 60gig drive to my webserver.. I don't have to use PhotoPoint or anything like that. :D
Now I need to go get some more video off my camcorder and add more MPEGs to my site.. I have room again! (the first 50-some gig was full.. at least it took a year or so to do..)
