(I did a search and didn’t find anything for new 2002 smog laws in CA)
I thought I saw an article that stated that a new CA smog law allows the exempt date to move each year to include 30 year and older vehicles.
Not that I want to go around polluting the air but I would have to jump through hoops to smog my 87’wrangler if I go to fuel injection. I figure I’ll go with an old style Bronco instead. And if it’s true that a new law allows the exempt date to move each year, this would give me a better selection to choose from. (i.e. I can get a 74 or 75 and just wait.)
Can anyone verify this?
($2k for the mopar kit is too much)

I believe the change was in 2000, and as it stands, it will be a rolling 30 year exemption. Currently '73 down is exempt, and in 2004 the 30 year rolling exemption will take effect.
So in 2004, 1974 will be testing exempt.

My understanding was that since 98' 73 and earlier were exempt (25 years, not rolling) now in 2002 it's 30 and rolling.
Guess it doesnt' matter, as long as it's a rolling exemption now.
Looks like I'll be selling a Jeep and getting a Bronco in the future. :D

i wouldn't count your chikens before they hatch if you remember in 1990 they started this law and it was supposed to be a rolling 25 years (1965exempt) but the state didn't hold up it's end of the bargain and there was a law suit filed against calif that was won forcing the state to comply. i think i heard there are numerous challenges being made against the rolling exemption on going right now
so i would be cautious about speculating anything especially when the enviro/freaks or involved

The "law" (SB42 I believe) was enacted and stated '73 and earlier is exempt with a 30 year roll. Therefore, '73 and earlier are exempt until 2004 at which time the '74 gets to be exempt. In 2005 the '75 will be exempt, and so on. At the last minute before passage, the bill was changed from a 25 year roll to '73 and earlier with a 30 year roll.
Since the law was enacted, there have been several attempts by the nature nazi side to pass new legislation that would eliminate the 30 year roll. It has not passed yet. Buy a '73 and don't worry about it any more.

Loco4x4 has it except it was SB48. If you want to start with a 72 bronco frame and title I have one in the forsale section. This would be a good way to go especially if you had a 76 or 77 for parts:D

Rumors suck! I Have haerd so many versions of what is supposed to happen I don't pay attention any more. Even the DMV and a few Smog tech give conflicting stories. Until it's in official print, I'm not assuming anything....:skull:
