I have an 86 CJ-7 with a D44. I need new gears so what is compatible? I know a guy with some old jeep trucks like J10 style and an old waggy. Would any of these gears work??
thanx

Assumeing you are talking about the stock rear end - any standard cut D44 gears will work with the right carrier. But why not buy new? What are you trying to do? Are you changeing ratios?

OK sorry, let me clarify. My jeep is clanking and jerking (especially on turns). So my friend who is a great mechanic and previous jeep owner says I need to do a ring and pinion job on the rear. He didnt tear it open, he just looked and messed with the driveshaft. Hes rebuilt tons of jeeps and trucks so i trust him. A local guy has some Honchos and a Waggy. Will the differential gears work with mine? Or do you think that it may be another problem all-together. Honestly, I dont even know if the rear has been modified, I dont think its locked b/c in 4wd sometimes only one wheel will spin. I will have pics of the inside of my D44 soon, i changed the fluids a few days ago.
So what do yall think???
thanx

First of all whatever gears you put in the rear have to be the same ratio as the front gears are. Finding a set of used ones with the same ratio could be the proverbial needle in a haystack. Second, new gearsets aren't that expensive. Just go new.

sounds like bad spider gears, only times I've seen problems with gears they just break. No warning they just go. Honestly if your trying to fix it why not do it right? ......hmm my old ass gears are warn out I will replace them with more old parts!!.. yeah thats the ticket :barf:

Seriously gears are about $150 then some money for bearings and if your freind is a mechanic he should be able to hook it up with the install. yeah it cost some money but you get what you pay for

"warn" is spelled WORN. And im not a moron... I wont swap in gears that will go out in a year. Ill make sure they are in good enough condition to last me a long time. Look up at my post I am putting. I have pics of my gears, tell me what you think is wrong?
