What is the most any of you would pay for a sm420 that is in supposedly good condition? Looks OK inside and seems to shift smoothly. I want to ditch the 3 speed and get some crawl but I need some idea of how much to be willing to dish out.

Thanks....

Depends, I got one for $125, and the 2nd gear syncro was bad and eventually burned up the third gear syncro. Ended up getting one from pic n pul for $40 on half price day. Tons of them around this area.

I got one from a 1962 2 ton bread delivery van for $40 on half price day too. It had 50,000 miles on it. After tearing it down and inspecting it, it looks real nice, but I don't have it installed yet.

I got Mike Smythe's adaptor kit. The adaptor plate is a CNC work of art. I ended up only having to grind about 1/8 inch off the hump. Ask Mike for the details; he hangs out here.

I'm looking for some 3 speed transfer case linkage parts, especially the lever that goes on the Hi/lo shift fork in the top cover and the relay crank. Anybody have any of this stuff just lying around?

I've got what you're looking for, but its from a 4 speed transfer case. Not sure if its the same. If that will work, PM me.

Pinhead,
Is the part you are looking for the lever (might not be the correct term) that goes thru the top cover? If so the 3 speed and 4 speed versions are different. The only difference is the way they are indexed for the attachment of the linkage.

I have $400 in my SM420, included new bearings and synchros, and the 11" clutch disk. Got the work done at the only tranny shop I could find that didn't tell me I would propably need a new torque converter when I called them! Except for direction changes, this thing shifts very nicely, and the gear whine is cool.

BTW, I test fit the clutch disk to the flywheel/pressure plate on the bench, prepared to turn down the disk (to 10.75"). I couldn't see any reason to, so I didn't. I used the flywheel/pressure plate from a 4 speed. This is contrary to what is posted elsewhere on this board. I can't explain it, except I didn't measure the disk so it could have been 10.5".

Adapter kit info, pics and pricing can be found at the link in sig.

The most I've ever paid for a 420 was $70. Most of them have been in the $40-50 range and less. They are just too common of a tranny to pay much for. I think the most I would ever pay is about $100, but it would have to be in near perfect condition.

Hey, thanks for the reply Screwzer, but like Mike mentioned the 3sp and 4sp linkage is quite different. From the pictures I have seen, it looks like it will be easier to adapt the 3sp linkage. I don't mind fabricating the parts, but I don't want to fabricate all the itsy bitsy parts if I don't have to.

There is always SOR: $5 for the parts and $20 for shipping and handling from the valley to Orange Co.

Highest price paid $100, from a jeep guy.

The one in my Cruiser right now.....I paid $20 at a yard sale.

Best price... was for free, found it in a garbage dump site !

What are they worth to me ???? they are all priceless !

I wouldn't run a Cruiser without one .

IMO the best fawkin transmission ever built !

what is the real advantage of the sm420 over my stock 4 speed tranny that I've got now? and how much would the adapter cost to match it up with my 327?

thanks guys

$0, assuming that you have a standard GM bellhousing, but cast iron is best with the extra torque due to the lower gears.

It is the adaptor for the tranny to the Toyota transfer case that is going to cost the most money, $150-350 depending on what you get and where.

here's the best place to get an adaptor. I recently got one and I am vey happy with it. IMO it's the best deal for your money spent.

BTW if anyone is looking for an "F" motor bellhousing, I've got a few of them I'd like to get rid of or find a home for.
For those of you who don't know......... it's the "F" motor bellhousing that is used to mate a SM420 up to a 2F LC motor.

What are you asking for a bellhousing? I suspect my local salvage yard is gonna try to gouge me as they are trying with an SM420 - he wants $350!! Ugh!! I just might have to take a day and drive the 3 hrs to Denver and spend a day yanking my own stuff!!

Thanks,

Thanks for all of the input!
My next question might be a bit more tricky. I have a '71 the the PO swapped in a 2f. It currently has the 3 speed mated to the 2f. Any idea which bellhousing might have been used??? If it is the 2f bellhousing how do I tell by looking at it? So I must have the F bellhousing to mate the sm420 to the 2f?

Sorry for all of the Q's at once......

The issue is really not whether the bellhousing is from an F or 2F, but rather whether it is for a 3 speed or 4 speed tranny. You have the 3sp and it is the one you want. Some F engines came with 4speeds and you don't want that one. The 3sp has a circular tranny hole while the 4sp is a fiigure 8.

The gear used to mate the Toy 4spd tranny to the 3spd tcase is unique. You will be able to sell it and recover some of your $$$. You will need to find the original 3spd input gear, it has 10 splines and will fit on the sm420.

Crawl Awn!

Thanks,

$25 for the bell housing and you pay the shipping.

BTW it is a three speed bell housing off an "F" motor, it came off a 1973 FJ40

No problem mounting to a 2F, right? Once I find an SM420 at a reasonable price, I'll contact you to see if you still have it!! Hopefully in the next week or so! No prob on the shipping, big employee discount with my FedEx shipping number!!

Thanks,
