View Full Version : Ghostly DII

Got a 2K DII in today. Dude says he was getting Random/Muliple misfires, and Misfire on cyl 2. He replaced all the plugs and wires, but still got the misfire codes. After checking to make sure he put the right wires on the right plugs (which he did) I went ahead with the old compression check, and it is pretty good about 165psi on #2. I am starting to get aggrivated. He is getting plenty of fire, but i am wondering if he is getting intermittent fire. I have read that 3,2 are on the same coil pack, but i haven't had any probs out of any of the other cylinders.
Any suggestions?

Bad wire?

nope, i switched with a new one, i hate to think it is a coil pack, but i would think it would misfire on cyl 3 also. I guess i will just sit on the couch and scratch my ass for a while and maybe it will come to me. I think the Dukes of Hazzard comes on in a few minutes anyway. :flipoff2:

Time for a valve job. Does it have 30,000 miles or more. IF so, you likely have sticking valves. Most likely the owner has babied the truck and not wound out the truck very much.

Normally i would have guessed valves also, but the DII have the self-scraping valves. There is no doubt in my mind that the guy babies the truck. Also i had decent compression on the #2 cyl, unless it is bleeding down. Oh well today starts another day.

Yep, sounds like sticking valve. Before you dig into it, get the tank down to about 1/4, then add a can or two of SeaFoam valve treatment, and drive it around in 2nd gear (around 4K RPM for a few miles). That's done the trick for me before. Now, I repeat this about every 6K miles, and no worries for over 20K miles.
Bye the way, I had my valves done under warranty at 30K miles, then got the misfires again around 55K. That's when I started the above procedure, and it's worked.

I find the valve hard to believe, it has great compression all around. Nothing under 165 psi, and the cylinder in question is 190 psi. I am beginning to think it may be an injector. I believe i am with Paul, i need to work on a Series for a few days after this one.

Take the valve core out of your compression tester and use fittings to put shop air into the cylinder in question. Listen in the intake and exhaust for leaks from sticking valves to rule this out. That is all.

Sticking valves will not always show up on a compression check. And the Rover situation, almost 100% of the time will never show up on a compression test. If I got the misfires you claim, we would be doing a head job. The so called sell scrapping valves are pretty much BS. All they really have is a carbon break, and not all of the DII's have the carbon breaks. The carbon break does not help with the true reason rovers stick their valves so much.
Trust me, its time for a valve job.

For what it's worth, mine ran as smooth as silk the entire time. Only clue was the idiot light and codes.

I'm with KC and Pendy on this one (although I have a nifty fitting that screws into the plug hole and hooks up to shop air).
You might be able to get some miles out of plugs/wires, etc or voodoo juice, but for whatever reason, doing the heads does away with the misfires.
As for which coil fires which cylinder, the cylinder D'Oh, that was for the GEMs engines, not the Devil-spawn Motronics, sorry...
Go find a Series truck to work on, it's good for the soul. I just drove my SIII from New Jersey to Fort Wayne, time for that cochlear implant, my ears are still ringing.
Peace,

You are in denial, it is valves, D2s are almost as bad as GEMS

Is that like a coyote bone in your ear. Wiley E. Coyote and his ACME extension.
