: driveshaft carrier bearing
CtTrooper 07-29-2004, 08:06 PM Here's the story. I call up my local Isuzu dealer to inquire about the price of a carrier bearing for the rear driveshaft. Mine is shot, as half of it is non-existent so upon takeoff it produces a nice shudder. I have an '89 Trooper with the gm 2.8l motor, and i have the 5spd transmission. At first the guy in the parts department tells me that he doesnt know what a carrier bearing is, and 2nd (after i explained what it is) that the manual doesnt have a carrier bearing, and only the automatic does. I responded that my truck was indeed a manual, and it also had a carrier bearing. I have never seen a Trooper with a one-piece rear driveshaft from the factory, so what's this guy thinkin? Could my truck have been an automatic at one point? I think this dealer might be the only one in the state, and its a good 40 mins away. So my trips there are as limited as possible. What's the deal here?
dafish 07-29-2004, 09:45 PM It will cost more to replace the carrier bearing than to get a one piece drive shaft. I got quoted over $300 to replace the bearing and it only cost me $200 to get a better and stronger one piece drive shaft. Any decent shop can have you a shaft made in a day or two. If you supply them with your original shaft it could save you some good $$$.
Also, I don't know any Isuzu that doesn't have a carrier bearing, might be wrong though.

CtTrooper 07-30-2004, 02:19 PM I can install it myself, and there are no driveshaft shops in CT anymore or else we'd all be going there to get them balanced and whatnot. I was just wondering what's up, this guy at the dealer obviously doesnt know what he's talking about.
only Isuzus i know of that dont have a carrier bearing is the SWB p/us. Mu 80 short box LUV dosnt have one (one piece drive shaft) but my 78 long bed LUV and my 90 Trooper both have that carrier bearing, both of them are manuals too. But the one piece shaft is much better, i dont know about cost becouse both of mine are still good. Good luck.
hunterdan 07-31-2004, 09:35 PM You can get that bearing for $80 at advance. I was in a bind and needed one, never thought to check the parts stores. I ended up having my friend drive me to the nearest dealer, about 40 miles away, and payed about $320. The one piece is nice, but you should have a body lift and you have to modify that cross member. But when my newer bearing goes, i will be going to a one piece.

Troopslinger 08-01-2004, 07:29 AM dude, i have one sitting in my garage. let me know if you need it.
ever heard of over land drive shaft? in montville? look them up in the phone book, they made me a 1 peice drive shaft for about 250$.
Frank
The shudder is cause by lift, not the condition of the bearing. The bearing rubber breaking down just makes it much worse.
You'll see -- you'll still have the shudder after replacing the bearing, just not as powerful. I did, and I am kicking myself for paying $126 for it (lowest price I found)
After replacing the bearing, and still having a shudder, I lowered my rear end by pulling leaves and it helped very much. Now my pup sits a bit more level.
paulevans76 08-01-2004, 04:28 PM i got one for 65 bucks and took the whole shaft to a machine shop and they did it for 20 bucks. best bet is to go ahead and get a one-piece made, though

It's definately caused by the carrier bearing, because, #1 there is virtually no rubber left to it, and 2, my truck has no lift :D
heh, i hear you now. Ok, just didn't want to get your hopes up. Yeah you should be OK with replacing it then.
RufusTheRam 08-10-2004, 10:15 PM i just got one for 55 from advance auto for my gf's 91.
CtTrooper 08-11-2004, 06:05 PM yeah i checked out advance auto $55 is a great price. Frank, a.k.a. troopslinger was nice enough to give me a carrier bearing that he had in his garage, and btw his sas troop is comin along nicely, im gonna toss that in and see how it is. if that doesnt work out, advanced auto it is. thanks everyone for the info, and i'll keep you posted.
CtTrooper 08-21-2004, 01:44 PM slapped the new bearing in today from advance auto for $55, relatively easy to do, just surprised never new that a puller was needed to get the old one off, o well worked out great no more shudder, told ya so :flipoff2: now its time for a  because it's pouring outside.
