which rover are we talking about? Either way I think mixing and matching to get the best of each setup is the best way to go.

for a D90 SG stage III has the best setup because they have matched shocks and springs where all the other options(except custom) are just off the shelf generic valving. Best balance of front to rear travel and if you go all the way with the 3-link etc. the best total package.
Now how much better is all up to the user.

I voted Rovertym for John's service and willingness to make whatever you want. His parts are as strong as anything out there (maybe tied with ARBs products), but wicked stout nonetheless.
I really think the best suspension is one that you know and design personally, incorporating all kinds of shit ti make it work. I definitely vote against any "kits". IMO, they blow and are too much $$$, leaving you stranded with someone elses design flaws...

Next Doug will come up with a poll like this: "Who's got the strongest drivetrain?" LOL
I think your whole rig is "OTHER"!!!;)
Some great components in that thing...

Man, I can't believe you would suggest that I would start a thread like that! :)

Certainly not saying that you boast, but I think the vote for 'other' was pretty much a given considering your signature!:)

The best mod (because its the cheapest and easiest) suspension mod to do on a coiled rover is a hinged radius arm.
I really frees up the front end (like a three link) but it can be a major PITA in some really tippy situations. I dont know how many times I have crawled forward onto an obstical and then go no its gonna tip and then try to reverse and all that happens is the arm just levers the rig over and I carnt drive anywhere untill someone jumps on the side of my rig.
Then again I would swap my hinge for a three link any day and one of these days I will. :D

So right. I've got Rovertym's offset trailing arms + spring re-seaters, but made my own shock hangers. 1/2 the fun of all this is figuring it out and making stuff. Rovertym's stuff is tough!

Merv,
I agree totally. I buy alot of shit, but have the most fun making it or having it made and piecing all the misc pieces together...

Other definately. I've gotten the most balance from using OME 764s on all fours with Safari Gard droop system in the rear with Rockware shock mounts. Front is 3-link with springs retained top and bottom with Doug M's external front shock mounts. Not only balance on the trail but balance between wheelin and road manners as well.
I agree with Brian about Rovertym's strength, but if it is strength to weight ratio you can't beat Rockware. Never seen one of their rear arms get bent and they are soo light, same with the front bumper, boxed but much lighter than SG or ARB...I've had all 3.

My opinion differs with what Teabag was saying about the Stage III.
I run the Stage III (non-3link) setup on my Disco and it has been nothing but problems and let downs. :nuke: I have broken upper and lower rear shock mounts on 4 different occasions, and thrown springs twice. For the huge price tag on the kit, its fair to except NOT to see these failures. :mad2: If I was out in a devoted rock buggy bashing my shit all up, then these breakages should be expected. However, I do my best not to needlessly beat the hell out of my rigs since they double as daily drivers and need to get my wife and I home from the trails.
As for the matching of shocks and springs vs. the "off the shelf" stuff, The shocks and springs of the Stage III kit are "off the shelf” items. The Fox shocks are nothing special and are listed on many other off road sites that sell Fox shocks. The springs for the Stage III kit, only until recently, were OME springs that had been stretched an extra inch. My truck looks like the Andrea Doria with the sagging going on with my passenger side springs now. I have a set of the new Rovertym springs to replace them with.
For the wheeling I do, the kit has given me no advantage over trucks with OME kits other than better posing pictures.

chris, i agree that the Stage III is not the end all be all of suspension kits. But just to make a correction, the Fox shocks that come with the kit are specially valved by Fox for SG. Yes you can buy Fox shocks anywhere, but those are the standard valving. Greg custom orders his Fox shocks to be optimized (in his opinion) for the kit.

I voted for Rovertym, John makes good, sturdy products. His customer service is better then anyones, large company or small one man shop and he is always open to new ideas.

If I was going to buy a total kit built by one manufacture and I was willing to spend the bank, I'd go SG stage IV.
