: width - what would you do?
CJ-Jeeper 01-23-2002, 07:16 PM Just got an RC60 for the rear - 58" wide 5 lug. My front 44 is only about 53", so I need to build a wider one. I have a Chevy housing to cut down. Ideally, I would like it to be 60 - 61", but also trying to use stock length shafts from whatever application works. These are options I've come up with, avoiding outboarding the springs. Useing lengths from the Warn site. I figure it would be nice to be able to pull a shaft from a yard & drop it in if needed.
1) 60 -61" = cut both sides - requires 2 custom shafts
2) 63" = cut long side 4" - stock Chevy short - '80 - '84 Waggy long side
3) 58" = cut both sides - custom long side - '80 - '84 Waggy short side
4) use 63" front & 1" spacers on the rear.
Which would you do?
Thanks for input
BTW, anyone know what a standard length Warn shaft costs compared to a custom length one from Dutchman?
5.0wrangler 01-23-2002, 07:56 PM 63" no cuttin unless you find a smokin deal on custom shafts (buy a pair of each)
Hammer down hope for the best
palmer 01-23-2002, 08:26 PM Go full width!!! Overkill rules!
NE-RokToy 01-23-2002, 11:57 PM how about 62" with wagoneer long side and dodge short side, also this is with the 6 lug outers. 5 or 8 lug will be wider
redruM 01-24-2002, 06:26 AM my front is 71" and my rear is 67" w/2" spacers
wider is better
Rat Patrol 01-24-2002, 06:48 AM I'd go with opt. 2, no custom shafts. You didnt say what size tires, etc. you will be running. If your going with anything larger than 36", you will probably want to go with custom shafts eventually, depends on the size of right foot and driving style. Either way I would stay around the 63" width. For me it seems to be just about right.

CJ-Jeeper 01-24-2002, 08:11 AM I'll be running the same 35x14.5's on 10" rims I have now.
I don't have the specs on Dodge shafts since Warn does'nt list them. also I want to stay 5 lug since my new 60 has 5.
I'm leaning toward #4
Thanks guys. Anyone else?
JeeperJake 01-24-2002, 12:16 PM another vote for full width!:)

CJ-Jeeper 01-24-2002, 01:14 PM full width is not an option. I nned to match a 58" rear.
MellowYellow 04-25-2003, 11:28 AM What did you end up doing?
I have the same objective.
I'm putting in a Waggy D20 58" in the back
The front I would like to match and be 6 lug too.
I'm SUA right now, but I know that I'll be SOA in about a year.
I was thinking chevy and cut or waggy and grind. Both seem like a bummer and not exactly sure what the outcome will be.
This jeep will not be full width. I'll do that another day to another Jeep.
Weezer 04-25-2003, 11:36 AM just get the chevy stuff and cut it down it is not that hard of a project, thats what I did to match my scout II rear and it came out great
MellowYellow 04-25-2003, 11:53 AM So, can I assume you cut 4" off to make it like a Waggy?
Can I also assume that you cut the 'C' bracket end off?
Weezer 04-25-2003, 11:55 AM I had to cut both sides, and yes I cut the Cs off, I went with ford outers to keep my 5 on 5 1/2 and my final width is 60"
Go as wide as possible!!!!

Good lookin flatty you got there man. From what i can see. what else as far as drive train are you running? Motor, tranny, tcase.
Sorry didnt mean to hijack the thread!
MellowYellow 04-25-2003, 12:22 PM so did you have to use custom shafts on both sides?
I am going as wide as possible...60 to 62" :D :p
Weezer 04-25-2003, 12:30 PM yes I had dutchman make my custom shafts. Im running A 225 V6, SM420, Dana18 with overdrive, axles are dana 44s with 5.38 gears, detroit rear with a lockrite front, 35-16-15 boggers, blah blah blah.
CrappyYJ 04-25-2003, 12:52 PM Why not cut both sides to use both long and short Waggy shafts? You'll end up with 60"-61".

If your going to do that why not just use a waggy front end
get aboot 60" with 87/8 (IIRC) waggy shorts, and earlier waggy longs...
Actually turning a F-250 44 into one of those tomorrow.
AndrewH 04-25-2003, 02:02 PM i'm using early waggy long and scout short. it is about 61-62" with 8 lug outers

because he doesnt have a YJ and wants to take advantage of his narrower perch to perch width.

I found a bare Dodge housing already cut down. Turned out to be 58.5" wide w/ 5 lug. It's about 76" @ outside of tires. It's plenty stable for an 83" wheelbase. I want to get the WB stretched. Then maybe go a little wider w/ 37 - 38.5" tires.
BTW: I think you mean an AMC20. It's not Dana
MellowYellow 04-25-2003, 09:12 PM yep I meant AMC20.
I talked to Parts Mike a few days back about dand 44 fronts, so I was trying to come up with a parts list in my head.
I've even thought of starting with a Ford to get the higher pinion.
I'll probably do what ever is cheep.
Anyone have a cheep waggy or chevy out there?;)
hoehand 04-26-2003, 11:51 AM I have a narrowed chevy housing that I cut down for my CJ. It is cut down to be 58" with 5 or six lug, and 60 with 8 lug. The C's are not on it, I was waiting to set up my caster angle. If you are interested pm me.

this is what I run..
I had the same problem. I found a 1980 Wagoneer D44 (61") and cut the long side down 4". This allowed me to keep my springs under the frame and an over all width of 57". A local machine shop cut and re-splined two stock long side axles for $250.00cdn. Then I picked up a pair of late 70's ford D44 outer spindles and rotors, bolt this all together and I maintained a 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern. In a nutshell I have a D44 57" wms/wms, stock waggy short side inner, custom length long side inner, and ford f-150/f-350 outers. And this is the best part - It was cheap!http://www.highriders.ca/albums/album01/acj.sized.jpg
