: Broke Longfields in a Zuk
punkskalar 08-02-2004, 12:28 PM Well, heres my setup:
Toy axles front and rear, 4.10s, Dual toy Cases with 4.7s in the rear, 100" wheelbase, stock 1.3 carbed engine, 37" claws..
I managed to break two of the new style longs this weekend at tellico, hopefully I will be able to get a pic up from my friend who also broke two in his 35" tired toyota truck as he broke two as well... Seems they all four broke going forwards and when taken apart the races in my were all cracked and 3 balls were sitting in the housing on both sides... The bells were stretched and the inner races were frozen to the cages, as you couldn't turn them at all inside the cage... These were all bought at the same time, and all four broke going straight... I thought that with my weight and power that this should not happen, and we had the least power and smallest tires on the trip, while others running 38-39.5" tires and much more power were not breaking the old style longs... Any ideas? Bad batch? Whats my next upgrade option if my little 2800 lb zuk and its 1.3 liters of pure fury are breaking these things... I hope to get a picture up soon... Otherwise, what else is out there?
punkskalar 08-02-2004, 12:44 PM oh yeah, all stock inner shafts, and this was the first trip out in my sammy for anything more than a quick test run, broke them on lower 2 in tellico, and before that only ran slickrock... So probably less than 7 hours on them all together... Didn't break any shafts or even start to twist any splines...
zukiboy 08-02-2004, 12:49 PM you may want to go back and try stock birfs......i'm runnin 37 mt/r's with toy axles....220:1 overall and have only broken one stock so far.....i recently bought a set of profields but i haven't had a chance to try them out yet.....i did break a front ring and pinion last weekend.....but i'm pretty sure the pinion nut backed off to cause that.....also i'm pretty sure that you can still get the old style birfs from long but you will have to send your cores in.......good luck..... :cool2:

YJ4RoX 08-02-2004, 12:52 PM not good to hear, light weight zuki with toy drivetrain and longs should be tough as nails. got any pics of your rig.
Azrckcrawler 08-02-2004, 01:13 PM Anything will break given enough skinny pedal, at least you had fun doing it :p Usually when someone down here used to break two it was because they didn't stop and fix the first one that broke. I would imagine in slippery stuff it would be hard to tell if you broke unless you saw the tire not moving. Were you hopping when it let go? I always wondered if housing flex could cause the birf or axles shaft to get bound up.
rotozuk 08-02-2004, 01:29 PM Sounds like you have part of the crappy batch of Longs. I'd give him a call!
I busted a pair of stock Toy birfs in quick fashion with 37" tires also. I then popped in a set of Profields as Longs were not available for a short time. So far so good. i blew the rear diff in Moab, but not a hint of trouble from the birfs. I now have a spare set of older Longs just in case.
I don't think they should have busted on you with what you described.

Shrock 08-02-2004, 03:34 PM Yeah you really should call him. Give them a chance to address this.
Has everone seen the new bling 30 spline 4340 ones?

I am seriously considering buy a set so I can go to 39's but I haven't had problems with the old ones and stock inners. Tough choice, I can get a new set of Longs and Chromo inners for $390 or the 30 spline units for $635.
punkskalar 08-03-2004, 12:32 PM well, anyone who has been to tellico knows that it is slick... So wheelspeed is a factor at times, but on the same note, i only had enough power to spin the tires in 1st gear 4.7 low range... Mostly because my fuel regulator crapped out and I would run out of power once the fuel bowl was drained... Oh well... As for the longs, they seemed to still be pulling, but started popping so I pulled them, and found the balls were sitting in the housing... So they weren't completely broken (at least not on my rig) but any longer and they would have blown for sure... I usually try to address noises rather quickly on a vehicle I have to drive back and forth to the trails... These longs were purchased right after they made the switch from the old style with the welded rings... My friend who blew the longs in his yota has called and I think we are going ot be taken care of somehow... So I will try another set given the customer service we are getting so far... To me that means as much as a good product, if not more... Im definitely not complaining about the longs at this point, because I know that stock birfs would have never lasted... And yes, I did have fun doing it, put her over on the roof at lower 2 trying a really tough line, cage held up great and the weber was still running upside down... For my first trip out it was a blast, and i hope to be back in action very soon...
IKUZUS 08-03-2004, 05:08 PM We need pics Hugh. Maybe the 1.3 is hopped up a bit if it busted the birfs!
Depot 08-03-2004, 07:15 PM thats weird... I ran the old style for a few years with absolutely no probs.
sammy with a 1.6 16 and 4:1 with 410 in the yota spinning 35X16 boggers.
the bearings did finally wear out but still didnt break so I got the new ones over x-mas during the sale. Now Im running dual cases (kick first, sammy 4:1 second) and still with no probs. Even added an e-lock in the front. And Im not even remotly close to kind on my rig.
On the same hand, a buddy of mine in nova scotia put a set of these new birfs in - same batch. Kick with yota, dual cases, and 36 TSL welded front and rear. Got stcuk bad... in reverse blew one birf - the inner cage not the bell and blew the inner axel on the other side. then just last weekend blew the other super birf going forwards with stock yota inners and a stock yota birf on the side he broke last month.
I just called up Bobby to ask him if he knew bout this and he was suprised to hear it happen specially on a zuk!
After all is said and done, im gonna keep on buying his products. So far his stuff has been stand up even if the odd one fails and he's a great guy to deal with if u have any probs.

Does not matter how small your motor is with dual cases you get a lot of tork to the axles. And if you are running a spool or welded in the front your asking for trouble, your going to break stuff all the time. the cages an race can't take that kind of treatment. With a spool in front when you make a sharp turn the tire on the inside at one point has to turn backwards because the tire on the outside is going 3 times faster. The best thing is to call me and send them to me and we will help you out.
tdavis 08-03-2004, 08:42 PM I have almost the same exact setup (EFI 1.3, dual toy tcases (stock/4.7), toy axles with elocker rear/ARB front, and I've yet to break any birfields.
I've got the longs (the $80 specials) and Pig's 4340 axle shafts. Not a problem with them.
If I do break them, I'll either replace them with the same, or go for the 30 splines (depends on what happens to the axle shafts)
JamisonWorkshop 08-04-2004, 07:35 AM mine are clicking away in my toy, pulled them to inspect, the inner star mushrooms out from excess force (rather than breaking). maybe a little too soft.
which is what you discribed, the race dosent move on the star anymore because of the mushrooming. At full lock the balls will fall out because of the larger ball hole.
I put them back in, thay are still clicking and didnt not break this past weekend. I limited my steering so that the balls would not have a chance to fall out on me.
I think that switching the longs from side to side after a while may allow you to get more life out of them, since you are then turning them on the opposite side of the inner star. My .02 I am still plenty happy with them, and hey not broke yet. :D
weedwacker 08-04-2004, 01:09 PM I was thinking of locking my front end but I'm having second thoughts now. I run a true track and in two years have not killed a birf. I beat on my rig and I really like not having to worry about breaking. I also rolled on lower 2 on July 7,04. The ledge near the top is REALLY dug out. I did hear that someone pulled a large rock down in front of it though. I was thinking about an Aussie locker with longs. Sound like a reliable combo?
JamisonWorkshop 08-05-2004, 06:12 AM that is what i am running, havent broke the longs YET. definetly got my monies worth though. with the cromies coming out, hard to beat the combo. unless it is a 60.
