Since search is disabled I'm not sure if this has been discussed, but here it goes.

I'm doing body work & painting on my truck & I really need to get the windshield rubber stripping out to fix some rust thats starting there. I pulled the chrome strips out & destroyed them in the process & then cracked the windshield while prying on the rubber

are there any tricks to getting this stuff out & how hard are the chrome strips to find to replace. Any hints on this would be helpful :shaking: I needed to replace the windshield anyways but I hope those chrome strips dont cost me out my arse :(

When I get a chance I'll post up some photoshoped paint scheme to get some input.

Don't replace the chrome strips. Order a gasket without the strips, they are available with and without. I wouldn't try installing the new windshield on your own. The installer that did mine said that the FJ60 windshield is one of the toughest windshields to install. They ran ropes with suction cups through my backseat out the back hatch and tied them off to their van. It took them a few hours to get it in correctly.

got a part # or aplication for the gasket without the chrome molding? I was just checking yesterday for the same part, but from what I can tell yes there was a gasket without the chrome, but the part # has changed(twice) to the gasket with chrome, so AFAIK you can;t get it anymore. Same with the rear glass gasket

I don't have a part number. The local glass shop (not a chain) just asked me if I wanted the chrome strip or not.

I just didn't put the strips back in after my windshield instal. No problems yet! Uh.. It's not raining is it?
I dechromed my whole 62 at once.. Pulled all the little chrome strips out of the window glass and off the rain gutter.

rustproof? na that would be impossible over here, just trying to slow it down

thanks for the tips... what is the easiest way to get it out? sledge? I'll get it professionly installed but would rather pull it myself to save the $$$ any tips on that would be greatly apreciated

I would think some of those nice body dent suction cup puller thingies would help a lot..

Last place that did my 40 just busted the old windo out.

Good luck!

I wouldn't bust it on purpose as it makes a big mess. Check to make sure you can get a new gasket. If you can get a new gasket just cut under the edge of the gasket with a utility knife and pop that baby out. Then remove the interior gasket with some slight tugging.

Also, when you break it you risk getting glass down in the defroster vents. It tears up a good Heater/AC motor real quick.

I'm pretty sure it has insurance :flipoff2:

I'll make some calls to some of the local windshield guys to see what they recommend.... thanks for the tip Eric, I'd also rather not be picking glass from my rear everytime I drive to the store (there are no malls here) :D

The windshield guys kicked mine out forward. Used the old gasket again. It's laminated glass so shouldn't be too bad on getting into the vents.. Maybe I didn't have the most professional guys installing mine huh? :)

one more quick question... what have you guys paid for a new windshield & gasket?

I remember the gasket was $56. I'm thinking the windshield was just under $300.

cool... I got a quote for $310 with the non-chrome gasket installed. Thanks for the reply
