I am trading a winch for a 79 chevy 25 (3/4 ton 4x4). I am going to need to swap out the cab and front end because of the rust. Also has a stock 79' TH350 that's toast. It comes with a good 86' 350 block and TH350 tanny.

My questions are ... will I be able to put a 81-87 cab on there? What is my best bet for fixing up the tranny.

Cabs will bolt on. If the both trans are 4wd, then just swap the cases out. If one is 2wd and one 4wd, then change the tailshafts over. If that isn't feasable, then TH350s are cheap and easy to rebuild.

73-87 bodies mount up the same pretty much....

is it at all possible to put a 87 front clip on a 78 cab?

the wiper cowl is in the 73-87 hood, it is part of the cab on the 81-87. That being said, anything is possible.

I know that it can be done but don't know the details of how.

That truck should have had a TH400 stock. May have been changed somewhere along the line, but every 79 3/4 ton truck or Sub I have seen has been a 400.
