my steering box has finally bit the dust..you fill er up, go fro a drive, and park over a drip pan as it than pours out teh bottom seal(and seaps out the back)
(tried to search for previous posts, but can't do a pirate search today for some reason..had not found anything last week though)
I'm all for teh c/b way of life and am planning on utiulizing my father-in-law's skills with hydraulics(forklift mechanic for 03 years)
He thought it may be some sort of a saginaw box, but I can't find anyone who has any imput on that at all. only supplier of seals so far are the dealer or B/P, RN etc...anyone done the replacement(rebuild?) themselvs yet? what seals did you use if so?
right now being fawkin' cheap, I am taring it out to take out seals and ry to match them up as NAPA or other bearing/seal shop if they can't help...
any suggestions ideas etc would be great!
so far all damage appears to be teh box, no seaping from pump, hoses or resivoir...
Paul(soooooo glad I pressure washed the engine/underbelly two weeks ago as I tear into things!)

Mine was puking out the output shaft. I re-filled the system with 25% brake fuild and 75% Lucas thick PS fulid. It was running dry in about 100 miles, now it's 4-500 miles. Seal kits are cheap
Full box STC2847
Output seals only STC2848
Input only stc889

thanks for the links...had teh #'s not bad prices.
my problem was I wanted to do it today/tomorrow, so was looking for alternate place in easy driving distance from Fresno...hymm! maybe too much to ask for? will tear it off after lunch and see if I can find a seal/bearing place if NAPA can't match them up...unless any more ideas? for now will probably just order from rds and when it arrives will have all apart and ready to re-asssemble, unless any better ideas come along that are faster...

The bushing on the output wears and allows play in the shaft which is why it leaks. A seal will not fix it for long. Meridian replaces the bushing with a bearing on the remans. $275 or so exchange.
Some get away with a seal, if you want to go this route make sure there is no play in the output shaft.

thanks Ron! I had wondered about this as this bushing takes on the pressures coming backfrom the wheels, huh! Wonder how simple it would be to make a replamcement(damn hard with teh lathe and mill deep in storage, but maybe could get someone to fab one up...gotta look deeper and see.) I figured a seal replacement as a temporary solution to get me buy until can properly completely rebuild all worn surfaces, but if can get a bushing from somewhere...hmm!

on another note, for future.....has anyone ever looked into these guys?
http://westtexasoffroad.homestead.com/hydrosteering.html
not that with 33" or even 34" tires I would need hydro steering....but looks cool!
if not, they do at least rebuild the box for $100 according to the web-page...but maybe that is on top of other services such as the innitial $150 to modify the box....
hmm! maybe y'all with 37" boggers on certain yeller d-90's? :D

I am guessing the bushing is available from LR.
YOu could try to replace it?

yeah! but.....I don't believe Land-Rover would supply the bushing....it's not like it's a series! :flipoff2:
...but seriously....
I have spenty teh last hour or two crawling under/over the beast...prepping the whole assembly for removal. Dang! there are a lot of bolts to remove! and all were still covered with goopy crud. after spraying liberal doses of brake cleaner and scrubbing, I decided to refill again and watch as it pours out.....I did, and was surprised to NOT see ANY pouring out the manky looking bottom seal!!! Yeah! hmm! it was coming from above somewhere...but where? I started looking, and it appeared to be coming from the low pressure hose from pump to resevoir. I removed the fan shrowd, serpantine belt etc to get a socket on the clamp. it appeared to e tight, but cound see the whole clamp wiggle... I fought with it for a while until had it removed and installed a new one fom the box of clamps I just bought(luckily!) filled the res. up again and sprayed another liberal dose of brake cleaner 'til all was dry. I started up, turned back and fourth a few times....no leaks at all!
for now...will check in a bit to see if it started after shutdown....hmmm!
BUT I know something is agonna happen to that bottom seal as it is drooping bad. I guess ther is a double row of seals on output shaft? or it just leaks a bit and not shown up yet...
anyway my face is red! wht an idiot! I should have known...it was fine(well seaping but not pouring before the head removal, and leaked like a bastard after....oh well...)

Buy some bulk multi purpose hydro hose and replace the suction hose. Unless you enjoy practicing this repair again.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say the supply line is 5/8" and the return is 1/2". Where did my short-term memory go? Oh yeah, Dead shows and series trucks.
The seals are available at NAPA for about $6.00 each. The bearings rarely wear, but are equally easily and cheaply available.
Remove your hoses and take the entire assembly to your favorite local hydro shop and tell them the only critical issue is overall length. Be prepared for more rigid hoses and sometimes difficulty in making them fit just right.

regarding teh hoses, Elisa's dad will make me a set of hoses s teh forklift shop, so no biggie...just need to take them off and give to him for a day or so.
regarding teh seals, I talked to NAPA...and they couldn't find anything...do you happen to know the c/b psart umbers or ?? s you read above, in the end, the issue was mostly that hose, but still will need to do teh bottom seal. I could go ad use the links OS sent..good price, but really want to know teh napa part numbers as I like to be able to just go over and pick up...especially as next months project is the leaky box on teh rangie...and I have a feeling it will not be as simple as a leaky loose hose clamp this time....
thanks!

You're asking how Rocky gets into the hat again :flipoff2:
Pull the old seals and take them to your NAPA store along with a caliper. Match them up dimensionally.
Where's my MAF?

in it's box sitting...waiting for me to drag my lazy ass to teh post office...will send tomorrow! :D
If I had time to do as you ask, I would, but elisa can't wait for a day or two while I remove the box and run around to match up seals etc(I know it may just take a total of fife hours to take out, match them up, and replace/install, but I won't take teh chance..she is an itinerate(sp?) teacher, and absolutely needs to know she has a working ride to the different schools...and doesn't want to be driving around in the disco for some reason..funny! she had no problem driving the series III, but the disco can be more of a handfull in panic situations/sharp turns/corners etc..
I have a spare leaking box back in the bay area, but it's 180 miles away right now..
