I've got an '87 HO 5.0 for the heart of my next project. I want to run a 435 and a 205 behind it. What years and models did this combo come in?? Which years/models did just the 435 come in?? Also, what is involved in turning a 2wd 435 into a 4wd??
As for bellhousings.......from looking on Ebay and such, it appears that almost all of the cast iron bellhousing from sb's are the same. A bh listed for a 70's stang looks exactly the same as one listed from say a early 80's f150 or something. Is this the case as long as they're both from a 4speed??

After thinking some more, is it that the car bh's are just a smaller version for the 157 tooth flywheel and the truck bh's are bigger and for 164 teeth??

78 & 79 Bronco's and F150 had the set-up you're looking for. I think the same combo was also used in F250's later into the 80's.

The 435/205 combo is pretty common from late 70's to early 80's ford pickups and bronco's. It's probably found in a lot more years than that, but I know those years for sure. The NP435 was found in a lot of years probably from late 60s up into late 80's. Very easy to find. They are easily identified by the aluminum top cover. Awesome trannys
You realize the 205 only has a 1.99 low range right? Anyway, the NP435's that come mated to the 205 have a 31 spline output shaft. The 435's from 2wd, or mated to a dana 21 t-case have a 28 spline output shaft. If you wanted to run a dana 20, you would want the 28 spline tranny.
If you wanted to run a 205 behind a 28 spline tranny, you would have to swap output shafts, everything else should be the same. The 28 spline 2wd tranny's are very common and can easily be found for $100.
Also keep in mind you'll need an expensive adapter to bolt up a dana 20. I'm not sure where an atlas fits into all this. I bet they make it for either output shaft.
My 435 came from a 1980 2wd f-150 6cyl. It had the cast bellhousing. I used a 164 tooth flywheel with 11" clutch. I'd recommend using the larger flywheel. I had to fab a bracket for a hydraulic slave.
The bolt patterns on ford trannys are pretty common, but I don't know how interchangable they are. Some of the mid 80's pickups had an aluminum bellhousing with a factory slave. I couldn't find one, but they're out there.

Starting to work on your flat fender? I talked to ya a few weeks ago about a HP44. I don't have any 435 setup, but I do have a T-18 out of a 79 bronco. I have the t-case and a bellhousing here somewhere. If you want a 435 really bad I can get you one.

with regard to the 2wd to 4wd conversion there are also 2 tailshaft bolt patterns a square one and a trapezoid one got to make sure they match up.

All the 4spds will have a 205 behind them, or the 23or21 what ever it's called. only the 205 will be behind a 4spd that has low range. There also was a 200 that came diverced mounted as well.
