I second the Ruger .22 Great pistol and lots of cool parts and pieces you can add later as finances permit. Bad thing is, you'll have so much fun shooting it, you'll rub a blister on your thumb loading the magazine over and over.

theres a local gun shop that has a bull barrel ruger 10/45 with adjustable sights for 225 bucks, brand new. Would that be considered a good price?

Modelo makes a few nice models. Cheap, too.

Pawnshop might be a good first stop.

I like the Browning Buckmark. It was cheap and is very accurate when you find the right ammo for it.

I've found that at least in the pawn shops around here, for approximately $15-$25 more than what they have for sale you can buy the same model brand new at a gun shop.

That's a bummer.

I got a like-new (as far as I could tell) nickle-plated Colt .357 six-shooter for $250 down in Durango. Seemed like a good deal to me...

The Ruger 22/45 I had made me swear off Rugers autos entirely. The thing was a piece of junk. My gun had constant problems with the trigger transfer bar hanging up and not resetting so you would pull the trigger and nothing would happen. I would have to thump the gun to get the bar to pop up to contact the sear to trip the hammer. After I got it back from the first trip back to the factory for that pistol, I would squeeze off a round then have to move the trigger back and forth untill I could feel the bar pop up. I would have liked to try the conventional .22 auto Ruger but I really don't care for auto .22's, too many feeding and extraction problems.


Having said that, the single action Rugers rock! I wish I still had my .22/.22 Mag convertible.

I have a few 22's, hands down favorate is my S&W K17... good handling, reliable and simple. For an auto... only one I really liked and wish I had one was the buckmark. Ruger also made a "backpacker" 22 I liked.

I have both a Ruger 22/45 and a Walther P22. The Ruger super accurate, but I like shooting the Walther just because its a nice gun. Both are top notch in my book...

Once you shoot the browning buckmark, you'll forget about the Ruger - I did.
You can buy NEF revolvers for around $150-200. I have one and use it quite a bit. It's good quality and accurate.
