Tell him to run a few more pounds of air in the front after they are installed.
We need to see more pics as he progresses.

Those shavings represent about 25 years of grinding, and $10,000 in abrasive wheels with the tools I have.

Overkill for a tow rig mabey. But steel is cheap and you have the mill. My guess is he's going to cut it down the middle to make two arms. Bet he dosen't have much more than time in them.
Sometimes it's fun just to build.

Judging from the finish on the arm he used about a 3/4" end mill. Hopefully, he used a shell mill or a band saw to remove the bulk of the material, but the pile size rules out band saw. If he was in a hurry he could have used a flycutter with the speed and feed set properly and blew through almost .100" per pass, but the chip color doesn't reflect such-- plus it's hard on the mill.

The one thing I can say for certain is that took a lot of fawkin time!!

It looks like plain old cold rolled steel. The weakest point on those arms are going to be the sharp corners. This is a potential area for cracks, especially the inside angles. He should round the corners.

In general theory you're right but go back and look at those arms. He could put those on a dumptruck and never look back

WTF...............If he puts those on they're just going to fall off on the first bump he hits ripping the frame in half...is it me or is that 6" thick?

I disagree with you and agree with JB. Doesn't matter if "thick" steel is used or no...it' still not a great design, and most certainly has the potential for great concentration of stress....not good in any steering component. Plus, overdoing the material to compensate for poor design is just , well.....bush league.

A wise friend once told me - materials don't have strength...shapes have strength ;)

JB - just added you to my list of people to pay attention too !:D

Thanks for the props, but don't heed my wisdom too closely, I'm just a lolely electrician that reads little. ;)
