Balancing MT/Rs

when I got my 35 MT/Rs mounted those suckers at the shop put wheel weights 1/3 the way around my friggin rim. Has anyone had problems balancing these tires, not to mention the first time I hit the trail I'll peel every one of them off!!! I know 35's dont often balance well but this is crazy!

I don't know about the GYs, but my BFG wouldn't balance for shit, so I ran them about 300-400 miles and they almost balanced themselves. On my XJ I always had to run the tire awhile before balancing it, especially going 35" or bigger.

I just got a set of the new BFG 285/75 MT-KMs and they had to do the same thing for them. Got friggin weights 1/2 way around the rim whereas the old set only had 1 or 2. :confused: Maybe they are getting sloppy over at manufacturing or the tire guy mounting them was a moron.

Damn I thought they would be better than that. My 36in cross ply silverstones had weights 1/3 the way round the rim and I thought that they were really bad but understandable for what they are (big and cheep) and after one month I knocked just about all of them off. The tyres you guys are talking usually balance up really well.

You guys havent got bent rims of something but I guess if they are all like that then it would be the tyres for sure.

In general 4x4 someone mentioned they demounted a tyre to through some golf balls in. WTF does this do. Does it balance the tyre. I would imagine that they would get flung to the out side and make it worse if anything.

I'm telling ya, you gotto drive them up to highway speeds unbalanced and get them warm. They'll balance up way better. Chris, my 35/12.50/15 are mt/kms and they took almost no weight after 200-400 miles of "settling".

I read about this back along time ago in Peterson's. They have to do it with anything larger than 38".

I'll try that. I had them mounted on the disco but with the sagging springs on one side, I though I was gonna rip the slider off when turning. I'm going to put them on Lisa's 90 and save the current 285s to try out on the old stock rims once I get the new springs in.

I did get them for the 90 since hers were looking a bit tired but mine were worse. Plus I have been having a blast getting into doing more larger rock trails and wanted to try the larger size but with the offset steels, it looks like they might start catching the top of the fenders.
As for looking bitchin, if you looked at the good side of the truck, they did look pretty. LOL

I've never heard of the settling theory, but it sounds good to me. My MT/Rs took a whole lot of weight on a couple of them and very little on the others. Another thing to check is the rims. As much as the GCR rims are $50 rims, you get what you pay for and I've bent a couple pretty good. Since they're so cheap to replace, I just ordered a new one and called it a day.
