: d44s with 5.38s will I break em ?
Strange Rover 01-24-2002, 01:08 PM I building up a Range Rover/Land Rover Series IIa hybred.
Its got d44 front and rear (scout II) and both are standard cut.
I want to run 5.38 gears (and some 39.5 tsl:D ) and what I want to know is if I will break them.
To get the 5.38 gears they have to be specially imported (4.88 is the lowest I can find that any one stocks) so if I get them and break em I will have to wait a long time to get a replacement.
Should I but three sets straight up cause they will break.
Im running standard axles and not alloys and I can handle breaking these so will these be the week link or will the pinion eventually fatigue.
My rig should weigh under 3300lb, and with the 5.38 overall reduction will be about 75:1 with a 130hp rover v8.
Heres a pict (still half built)

I think you can answer that one for yourself:smokin:
Strange Rover 01-24-2002, 01:47 PM So what will break axles or the pinion. If its axles I can handle that because I can get more but if I going to break the 5.38 centres then its a major PITA cause im in australia and I got to import them.
So are the 5.38 gears weak and going to break or are the stock axles gonna break.

RCKRATZ 01-24-2002, 01:49 PM I've never broke the pinion on my 44, so I wouldn't know.........but with that in mind I wouldn't feel real comfortable with 39's and that little pinion. jmo:cool:

Sam my guess would be stock axels. my buddy had 39.5's on a 44 front and he still hasnt broke anything up there. jiMMy
I THINK THE WEAK LINK WILL BE THE AXELS. I BREAK THEM EVERY NOW AND THEN AND I RUN 36"tslS. BROKE TWO LAST YEAR ALONE.
Strange Rover 01-24-2002, 03:34 PM OK Im starting to get feel for it. So the general consensus is that I wont break the gears but I will break my axles all over the place.
The reason Im concerned is that im used to rover stuff and with the rover 4.7 gears the pinion gets real small and is easy to break.
Is it common for people to run 5.38s gears in d44s. Has anyone heard of these gears breaking (cause the pinion is so small).
Sorry for so many questions but I really want to only buy 2 sets of these gears and not waste my money and import 3 sets.

Hey Sam- to answer your question....seems like it should not be a prob for you....to compare, I have a 4 cyl Yota with dana44's/Detroits/5.89 gears/ 36" TSLs...I'm running a 215:1 low range and the harsh boulders here in sunny Arizona have not hurt the ring/pinions. Mine is a daily driver. Axles holding up...it's just the dam u-joint clips that keep walking out....or the machined groove that the half clips slip into, they "chip away" and then the clip falls out again. Dana makes some nice gears, I would never have guessed that 5.89 stuff would hold up but sometimes the only way to find out is to do it. I think there's only a couple of people on this board that do 5.89....5.38 is not as uncommon as you may think. www.dreamwater.com/zuk
aaronlosey 01-26-2002, 02:23 PM the front u-joints will be the first to go. if you run ctms and warn shafts, you should be fine. i am wondering about the quality of the gears though.
do the warn full floater in the rear or some custom shafts and you will be fine. with that engine and weight, you should be fine on 39's and dana 44s.
most of the people who break them constantly are using WAY too much stupid pedal behind a v-8 in a 5000lb rig. wheel smart and you will be just fine.
jp junkie 01-26-2002, 02:47 PM I have never broken or known of anyone breaking 5:38 gears.:)
Curtis 01-26-2002, 03:40 PM I broke 4.56 gears in my dana 44 with my 39.5's and my v6. I was fully getting it though. I broke one axle in rocks and replaced it. Then in a mud comp I blew up my Detroit EZ, the ring gear and blew the cap on one ujoint in the driver's side. But, like I said I was fully on it with the gas when it happened cause it was in a competition in the mud. It just depends on how ya drive it, but I would bet money you'll break axles with the 39.5's in the front. And, I'd guess you will break rearend parts eventually with 39.5's.
Highlander 01-26-2002, 06:00 PM It was the ring gear on mine that let go first , but I was " relocating " a 54' moble home uphill
Strange Rover 01-26-2002, 06:31 PM Good info guys.
Think I will get them :D
