A buddy of mine and I are thinking about starting a club. Anyone have any hints, tips, tricks to make it work?

Our club is non structured we have no "boss" or dues or laws or anything. We get together once a month BS and watch videos than ask around who wants to go where. It's an excellent club.

If you are gonna organize as a club, it is necessary to have bylaws, etc. Also, real good idea to incorporate, in todays suit happy society it will make it harder for club members to be found liable if something bad happens.

I already looked into doing the bylaws, and such.......but how much work is it to become an inc. What about taxes and such?

What a bunch of BS to just have fun with good people.

Incorporating is only the beginning there is liability insurance a whole lot of lawyer-ease buka buka, what's the fun in that.

Oh and I'm on the Board of Directors of a National 4wd organization so I know what I'm talking about.

Just go out and have fun.

We just made RCRC a cal4wheel club not too long ago, got all our stuff on-line (I actually need to make some changes)

We are not incorporated, only thing we have done is join cal4wheel and get a PO box, stickers, shirts, etc so far..

By Laws (http://www.rivercityrockcrawlers.com/ByLaws.html)

Vehicle Safety Guidelines (http://www.rivercityrockcrawlers.com/VehicleSafetyGuidelines.html)

Trip Rules (http://www.rivercityrockcrawlers.com/TripRules.html)

Becoming a club is great, it means you care about the sport and are looking to promote and preserve it - by contributing to causes such as FOTR, cal4wheel (which in turn contributes to causes), tread lightly, United, etc..

This is exactly why the idea came up. I am already a member of Cal4Wheel and contributed to the water bar reconstruction on the Rubicon, but I want to get more people involved and if it means a little extra work then so be it.

The reason I suggest incorporating is, like I said, a purely legal thing. If you are doing a club thing, and something bad happens, and somebody decides to sue, it makes it less likely that you will have personal liability as a club member, a corporation is a legal entity, like a person.

but if it is sanctioned by the organization you are a member of aren't you covered by them? (aka cal4wheel)

How did you go about getting your club sanctioned by Cal4wheel?

you just go to a meeting and they look at your by-laws and vote on you (there is a north district meeting this weekend, you oughta atleast come check it out..)

When I went they knew who I was allready (pirate word travels..) and they wanted the pirates but settled for RCRC

Anyway, if you go you see how much cal4wheel really does..

If I might ad some insight here if youre a club of any size I would highly recomend incorporating its not that costly to do and it does relieve some of the individual burdon if there is an accident of some kind you need to have officers and board of directers and depending apon the money you plan on carrying they have different classes like if you maintain under ten grand in youre account you can get non profit statis and I also think that liability insurance is a must cause things get all wacky real fast if someone gets hurt and being a corperation doesn't mean that youre not gona get sued I'm presantly Grand Noble Humbug of Paradise chapter of E Clampus Vitus most of you won't no what that is but we have around 4000 members in Butte County so were some what of a large group, now a couple years ago a guy got in a wreck on his way home from one of are functions and his pasanger got killed now you would think that he's on his own wright, wrong his family sued and the lawyers went after all officers, board members and 100 john does ! thats just how it works I'm not trying to scare anyone just want you to no what can happen. we carry two million in liability insurance it cost us around $600.00 a year wich is not to bad, hope this helps

I've already been doing that for the past 9 years.....I just feel like it's time for myself to get more involved.

You might want to check out www.wildyoats.com Seems like they are very well organized. Just email any questions to Johnny. Sometimes he's really busy (you can tell buy looking at his truck), but he'll try an help. He's a good guy.
