: Scout D44 rear, 55" wms to wms????
Po' riggity 01-24-2002, 05:15 PM Well, I measured the scout 44 rear I have sitting in my yard, hoping to use it for my yj, and it came out to 55" from outside of drum to outside of drum.. does this sound right? If thats really what it measures, no biggie, I have to get adapters anyway, I'll just make them 2" wide so that the total width comes out to 59" but I just wanted to know if this was right... I thought scout 44's were 58" wide..

Old Scout 01-24-2002, 05:44 PM I bet it came out of a Scout 800 and not a Scout II.
Po' riggity 01-24-2002, 05:54 PM Ok, well.. thats fine, is there anything about the axle I need to know about? Any weak spots? still has 30 spline axleshafts right? The width isnt that big of a deal, I am converting back to 5 on 4.5 to match the front D30 till I can afford a front 44, so I will just get adapters that are 2" wide on each side, so that the axle width is about 59" overall.

Hayraker 01-24-2002, 06:13 PM I thought you said you measured it, are you questioning your skill at reading a tape?

Yes I am questioning my skill at reading a tape! :flipoff2: If you knew me, you would know I questions all my so called "skills". I guess I just want to know what it came out of if it wasnt a scout II.. sounds like a scout 800. Now on to my next question...
Is there anything about this D44 that I should be concerend about? Are the shafts still 30 spline??

Hayraker 01-24-2002, 06:22 PM I don't know, can you count to 30, if so it will be fairly simple to find out:flipoff2:

oldjeep 01-24-2002, 06:34 PM Check the ends of the axles and make sure there's not a nut on it. Not sure about 800 axles, but the early CJ D44's had 2 piece axles which are not desireable. If that is the case, the axles would be 10 or 19 spline.
Po' riggity 01-24-2002, 06:42 PM Im not sure if the axle has two peice axles or not, but I can check it tommorow. So if there is a nut on the end, where the brake drum is, that means they are two piece? I suppose it doesnt matter much, I pretty much got the axle for free.. so if I have to put new shafts in it, it won't be a big crisis.

Curtis 01-24-2002, 07:08 PM You're gonna have to pull the shaft to be sure. Some of the earlier Scout stuff had the two piece axles and some had the tapered shaft. They both suck cause a 4 banger can snap those things.
Check with JoshC in the forsale section. He has a 64 project Scout he is selling. The axles he has there are awesome (I know cause I built 'em). Scout II front and rear ready to go.

Po' riggity 01-24-2002, 07:17 PM Thanks curtis... I guess I will pull the shafts.. IF it has the nut on the end.. if not, should I assume its 30 spline? I replied to Josh's ad letting him know I want his rear 44...

makkat 01-24-2002, 10:42 PM The '71 800's and some of the '70's had a 30 spline, flanged 44...same as a SII but narrower. Just look for a cap on the rear axle, if it has one it is the 2 piece.
Po' riggity 01-25-2002, 12:28 AM Ok, thanks for the input.. I have a feeling its got two piece axles.. but I'll check for sure tommorow..
