This Dana 60 has some kind of locker or limited slip. We have no idea what it is. Can anyone identify it?

I have one in the rear of my truck (factory deal with IH) and I like it. You can build them up to be very tight and strong. I've never seen an IH truck with out a locker in the rear


I notied with mine is I went up a hill in my back yeard and I lost my traction and the left had tire was spinging on just an idel so I gave it some gas and the other tire locked up and was spining. Also I did a burn out on my street and both tiers were spining with equal langth of tracks

Yep, it's a powerlock. I got my rear 60 out of a '66 IH. It had the powerlock and 4.88's, with a granny low 4 speed. This was all in a 2wd truck!

Does anyone know if the 30 spline one can be converted to 35 for a reasonable price? How good would this be in a front axle application?

I had a powerlok in the front axle of my 5 for a while. It's better than a trashlok, but its still an LSD. You'd need side gears from a 35 spline at least, I dont think there are any case differences otherwise (I may be WAY off on that.. ) Personally I'd skip it (front or rear application) and put in a locker.

We added a few extra plates and installed them upside down. Tried it out and it works great.

Yeah, I did that with mine. Worked great for about 6 months when I was in AZ then back to being an LSD :(

I'm going to put another ARB in my front 60, I was just wondering if it was worth putting in an axle that I build for someone else.

No doubt, a power lock. You can tell by two things. The bolt together case, and the V shaped holes around the cross pins, oh and it has 4 of these.

It's really not a great choice for a trail rig, front maybe, rear IMO never. Just when you really need the "locker" the clutches will slip. The bigger the tires and the more miles on the unit the faster this happens. It's not a true mechanical locking diff. It is probably the best limited slip there is though.

Makes a very good diff for a tow rig!

Works great in the front when you are trying to keep your D44 together. You either look at it like "just when you need it to lock" or "just when you need it to slip to save the ujoint". Dont get me wrong, you cant beat a detroit in the rocks, but detroit's and 38"+ meats tend to snap D44's like toothpicks.:D :D

Roughly $200 in parts to convert it to 35 spline...provided the axle shaft hole is big enough to accept the 1.5" shafts
