You gonna tow very often? That doesn't sound really ideal for Colorado, though it'd probably work just fine in the flatlands. I will say this, buddy of mine had a 5.9 5-speed 2500 2wd, and it seemed to maintain speed uphill much better when towing than my dad's 5.9 1500 with an auto tranny. So, I'd say it's AT LEAST as good as that.

It will be fine as long as it is a diesel.

ive hooked up my trailer and rig to a truck i wanted once, ended up passing on it cuz it sucked. i would ask, the worst they can do is say no. but hey your buying the truck to tow so might as well test it for towing!

If the price is killer and you don't mind springing for a built transmission i would say go for it. I have a 97' 1500 ram with the 5.9/auto and it sucks for towing. The tranny hunts all the hell around on long grades. The motor has plenty of power for towing but the trannys are very weak and overheat easily while towing. I started towing when it had 85K on it, orignal motor and trans. After 4 trips i notice a deffinate differance in the transmission. It is starting to slip and hunts for gears way more than it did before i started towing. I would highly recommend to stay away from the 5.9/auto combo.

he said he found a 5 speed, that should hold up fine as long as the motor lasts before the newness ummmphhhhh wears off and cant pull hills while in 3rd.

For flatlands they arent bad. Hills they start to slow down a bit. But they still will out tow a 70's chevy with a 454. On the same hill, a 2500 ram with 4500 lbs behind it did 75+. The Chevy with 4500 lbs was maxing out at 45.

Biggest things to note on the newer gasser dodges, is that the intake manifolds tend to leak, and often (like every 5k miles replacing the seals if you dont upgrade the plenum pan) and the timing chain gets LOTS of slack in them after about 50k miles. Mopar combustion chamber cleaner is your friend (no joke, the truck drives ALOT better after using the stuff).

And unloaded, my 96 5.2l 1500 will whoop a stock 96 2500 CTD.

I've got a 97 x-cab 4wd 1500 5.9 gas and it does ok. It has 3.55's in though too. I think it would do a lot better with 3.92's or 4.10's. I got with 60k on it and has 103k now. I used to tow a sami on a 16' trailer and had no problems. In the flats I could leave it in OD(auto tranny) then shift to 3rd in the hills. I usally stayed in the 55-60 mph, but I could go faster if I wanted to. The tranny is holding up somehow! All I hear is how everybodys' blow up at 80k! It doesn't help the fact that I smoke the tires all the time! Probably why my t-case has a funny noise! :grinpimp: Lately I can slightly notice that it starting to get worn (motor/tranny) so I've been easy on her. Though last week I took a load to the steel recycler. Loaded with trailer 12,200 lbs. Empty-7400lbs. I figure with the trailer weight I was pulling around 6500 lbs. Yeah she wasn't too happy with it. But she didn't complain at all. So all in all I want a 01' 2500 H.O. diesel with that man. 6-speed. :D :p

The title says 5speed his post says auto. To my knowlege 5.9L gassers never came with 5speeds. Also 4.10 were never standard equipment on gassers, just the 3.55's and 3.92's. I have the 3.92's with 285 75 r16 BFG M/Ts and it pulled OK, but just OK.

you couldn't get the 5spd behind the 5.9 in a 1/2 ton, but you could in 3/4ton.

3/4 tons got the nv4500 behind the 5.9l. They also got 3.55 gears or 4.10's.

Total distortion: try a can of mopar combustion chamber cleaner in your truck. Its $8 from the dealer. After using that, my 5.2l with 115k on it runs and drives better than my buddys 5.9 with 40k on it.

Don't be bashful about twisting that motor to 4k+ rpm while towing they love to sing and thats the only way they seem to pull
