: 3.25 turn saginaw box
I have beat the bushes looking for a 4 bolt 4 turn box but the 3.25 is the best that I could find. The box I found has all the right numbers and is a 4 bolt box, but it only has 3.25 turns.
Will this cause me endless grief or should I just keep looking for a 4 turn box?
This box was attatched to a 74 Caprice. I have heard that older 60's cars may have the 4 turn box, but the Pontiac that I found had the box attatched in a different place.
This is getting very tiring......................
3.5 and 4.25 varieties.. just so you know
treerootCO 08-15-2004, 02:33 PM I prefer the 4 turn box for safety reasons. You need to be looking for the big beasts of the yard. Mine came off a 64 or so Bel-air station wagon. This is a 63...
haystax 08-15-2004, 03:53 PM I run a 3.5 turn and it's a little sketchy on the highway, for trail use it's fine. I think you will get used to the feel but not a good idea if someone else will drive your rig who may not be used to quick steering in a short wheelbase vehicle. I got tired of looking for a 4 turn, kinda wish I had found one now though. Good luck. The Malibu and Nova boxes I found were 3.5, I plan on getting a 4 turn at Napa and using the 3.5 for a core when mine goes out.
smurfblue40 08-15-2004, 03:54 PM I have been able to drive 40s equipped with 3 and 4 turn boxes. You want the 4.25 turn box! (IMO)
Look for GM cars from the mid 60's to early 70's, thats where I've seen most of the 4bolt/4.25 boxes. Mine came from a 68 Impala.
Good luck...
4 bolt 4.25 turn Saginaw has the 5691676 casting #
Elcaminos had em, mid 60's Pontiac lemans, tempest ( full size)
fj40charles 08-15-2004, 04:28 PM My old sag. box was a 3 turn box and it was just fine.. Lots of variables such as the lenght of the pitman arm that will affect the "speed" of the box.
The box I pulled off had the numbers 5691676 cast into the top and a 76 cast into the bottom.
I guess even if the numbers are right the turns may vary.
Anybody know if there is any difference in boxes mounted in front of the wheels or behind the wheels of these old boats?
iron giant 08-15-2004, 08:18 PM I can't answer your most recent questions but I am in the same boat. I used a 3.25 turn box and left the bumper off because i knew I might want to change it out. It is drivable and I've gotten used to it (on the highway), but that said, I'm taking my box in to auto zone as a core for a rebuilt 4.25 turn box. This box will run me $140.00 but i'm not one to skimp on steering stuff. If you can find one in a junk yard go for it, if not, for safety's sake, I say go for a rebuilt box. Just another option,
David
iron giant 08-15-2004, 08:20 PM how about 80's jeeps? Don't they have a similar saginaw box?
fj40_rico 08-15-2004, 08:36 PM The one I intalled was out of an Hummer. It is a 3.5 turns but it only had 6000 miles on and it was free. I would like a 4.25 turns though.

I knew that I should not have got rid of that car (my first car) 61 Pontiac Lamans that I payed $100.00 when I was 16 :shaking: I may have even had to pay to have some one take it away :mad3:  Now I know why I never want to get rid of any thing :flipoff2:

Yeah! just get a bigger steering wheel, maybe from a school bus :D
seapotato 08-15-2004, 09:01 PM first one I grabbed from the wrecker had the right numbers on the casting and was even 4 turn ( or near to it..)
and it was from a 70's jeep. input splines were weird...
I tried for a while to get something to match up to the input splines, in the end I gave up and got a new one at Napa for a 68 impala and used my old as core.

WAGGYS! and the later waggys come with a bitchen pitman too (big taper)
Harder to find, but what about Scout II boxes? I thought I heard they were 4 turns
bustanutley 08-16-2004, 12:53 AM I too gave up in looking for a 4 turn box, so i'm going to give the 3.5 box a go. Start my swap tomorrow :) hopefully be done by tues
goldenarrow 08-16-2004, 07:58 AM mines 3.5 out of a s10 pickup. I run a 13" steering wheel. does fine.
Rockzar 08-16-2004, 08:34 AM I pulled a box from a heep grand wagoneer, early 80's maybe?- anyway, it turned out to be 3.5 turns. I ran it for a while and it was pretty sketchy, but still felt better than the set up I ripped out (stock cruiser steering box, worn tie rods, big ass steering wheel, etc.).
I replaced that box after a year and have been running the 4 turn box since. Way less sketchy at high speeds. You'll feel alot safer and less ragged after a long drive.
The hummer boxes are 4 turn, have a beefier case and may be variable. I think my box is out of a caddilac. I would think you could pull a box from a CJ and that would work too.
The spline count to the steering shaft on the 3 turn box I had was different than my 4 turn box too, so make sure you have that base covered.

G_Stratton 08-16-2004, 10:52 AM I used an IFS toy box instead of a Saginaw. It works great on the road and has worked fine off road. I'm running 35" tires at this time. It definitely beats the hell out of manual steering.

fc187 08-16-2004, 10:55 AM this booger was out of a waggy (late 70's) 4B 4T. works great! the piman was off of a later grand wag. big taper. more room to ream for one ton.

That was my thought. :D :smokin:
I never thought of the IFS toyota box because the early 80's Toyota box I have now isn't enough.
I am guessing that the later Toy boxes have more power, but with 37's I want all the power I can get.
But the info for late 70's waggys may be usefull because there are a few laying around that I never even looked at.
I am going to keep looking for a 4 turn box though as the local parts stores cannot tell me whether or not a rebuilt box will have 3 or 4 turns. And they want me to pay before ordering.

4 turn, big journal, 13/16-36spline input. there is a varible version of this box but I am not sure of the number. Try custom cruisers in Gilroy CA 408-842-FJ40. Ron knows the number for the variable box.

texican 08-16-2004, 08:42 PM Anybody know if there is any difference in boxes mounted in front of the wheels or behind the wheels of these old boats?
Yes, if you mount the rear mounted in front of your axle, it will turn the wheels the wrong way......just don't ask how I know this.......... :flipoff2:
