: 1989 Ranger with EFI won't start

I had this sitting in my garage for several months now, before finally replacing the oil pump.

It ran and started fine going into garage, battery is checked and good, it cranks just fine but won't start now.

Fresh gas, water remover/"dryer" stuff and fuel injector cleaner put in tank.

I didn't undo any electrical connections/muck with anything that would cause it to not spark-and all the 8 fricken plugs/wires/dsi etc were brand new-(like I said, it ran great going in, aside from oil pressure)

Only thing I can think of is fuel pump somehow gummed up due to the old gas in the tank and sitting for 6 months?

I checked all fuses, and relays click when turning key- I could've sworn I heard a fuel "gurgling" sound at the very first attempt to start it- as if the line/s were filling from the tank to the injector rail, but don't know if that was possibly just my imagination or not...

Do these have an in tank pump? I think they do but am not sure.

I seriously doubt the pump would "go bad" just sitting there,

Oh, and I found out they have an inertial fuel cut-off switch with reset button (bizarre, who'd a thunk it...) under the pass side dash. I checked/pushed it and that wasn't cause of no start either, sigh.

My hopes had been raised when I found out about it... :(

Is there an easy way to check if fuel is geting to the rail/injectors? I can't even see it very well, in order to crack open a fitting or a shrader port (if they have one)
Any tips or ideas as to a likely cause? Is it as much of a pain as I think it is to remove tank, check pump and replace? :shudder:

most frustrating. :shaking:

get some one to turn the key on well you have the gas cap off. Listen for the fuel pump in the tank then listen for the one on the frame rail under the drivers seat. If both are working humming or buzzing thats a start not go the the the sharder valve and check to see if there is any presure in the lines. It look on the drivers side of the intake its there has black cap on it give the valve a press. Not going to tell you to much other then there is gass getting up there. Check to see if there is spark if you have fuel. You may have pulled on a wire and now you have no spark.

Sorry never seen ranger they only have the one pump in the tank.

did ya unhook da battery while it sat. ?
theres a ground wire right next to it that grounds the fuel pump.

.........Hmmmmmm......

Yes I did unhook the battery to keep it charged on an auto charger. I don't think I undid any other connections, but now that you mention it there were some corrosion spots on a secondary smaller cable next to the main ground wire that I cleaned up with anti-corrosion stuff- maybe I'll give that one another closer look. thanks!

Jae_wrench- my old blind eyes couldn't find any shrader valve anywhere I'm afraid. The closest I came to was some kind of vacuum plug on the intake, but no valve. From what I can determine the fuel lines go up into the rail from below near the oil filter- I can't find any fuel related lines/fittings on the top of the intake manifold area. :(

thanks for your replies so far, fellahs :D
