Looking for some technical help here...

Have a buddy who's 2000 Land Rover Discovery is making some wierd noises in the engine compartment when driving down the highway. Noise is a fluttering/flapping sound, similar to the sound you would get from putting a baseball card in the spokes of a bicycle wheel (sorry, closest thing I could think of). Sound only starts when driving at speeds of 65+mph, but then will continue until coming to a stop, at which time it may or may not start again (until you speed up to 65+ again). Engine and rest of vehicle is totally stock. Took it to the mechanic and he can't figure out what it is. Any ideas??

Thanks in advance

What tires?
Have you looked at the front inner wheel arches. Ours broke away from the bumer after some off road ditch impact and later the tires had worn holes in front. If the tires have an open enough tread they could perhaps produce such a sound?

Checked the tires and they are ok...the sound is coming from directly under the hood (almost like it's right in front of the windshield). Also, this noise does not always happen when he goes over 65...he said it did not make the noise yesterday, but it did this morning. Thanks again.

One of the serp. belt idler pulleys wears on those trucks and makes that sort of noise. Make sure it has had that plastic pulley replaced with a steel/Alum one.
