Playing with some more ideas. I was going to do this years ago, but didn't want to loose road ability. Now I have a trail only rig and was thinking about it again.

Has anyone done this?

I want to remove the short shaft and replace it with an LJ t-case.
I will leave the 1.3 drivetrain alone. This will give me a 112:1 final.

Should I move the stock t-case back, or bolt the LJ one direct with no U-joints. It will not see any road, so vibration should not be a real issue. This is a local beater. I have 250.00 total investment including tires, cage, lift, body work, paint , locked rear and 2" offset rims. This will be all R&D.

I need something more than 64hp and 3.73 gears to turn the 33's.:D

LJ 80's have a 1.8 :1 high range......and a 3.1:! low.
the only question is can you handle all the reduction in hi range........I would think that you would be revving the heck out of it just to get down the road
Also the LJ gears are teeeny-tiny.........they were only meant to handle an 800cc engine........that's less displacement than one cylinder of a 454............in the whole engine.
But I've seen it done........you could hear the guy (REO ) coming as his twincam bounced off the rev limiter....

Yeah, I'd think it would be too weak also. If the cases were easier to find it might not be that big a deal but LJ cases are getting like hen's teeth - at least around here.

If you do try it though, if you bolt the cases together flange to flange take the flanges down to you machinist in town to get the bolt pattern as close to perfect as possible. It'll help the bearings on the in/outputs last a little longer (vibration).

As I said, it will be Trail only. Top speed along the gravel roads in the forest between trails to be 35mph.

I'd be happy to get the year out of it. I have a few replacements LJ T-case available to me. :D
