Most people know truck axles well but what about some info on this...

A Ford Crown Victoria comes with an 8.8 rear axle (as far as I can tell)

This 8.8 has DISC brakes w/ a 5 on 4.5" bolt pattern, just like the hard to find Explorer axle. From a rough measurement it looks like 62" wms to wms.

Anyone have any concrete info on these 8.8's. Exact wms to wms and spline count (I'm guessing 31)

The ones I have looked at are in Crown Victoria taxi cabs, of which there are about 20 in my local pick n pull. Looks like they will be real cheap.

Thought this might be a good option for those looking for an 8.8, just wondering if anyone else had looked at these before.

28 spline unless it is a LIMO chassis then 31 spline

28 spline is fine, with big tired 4x4's the 9 inch and 8.8 semi floating axle shafts usually break just inside the wheel bearing where 28 and 31 spline axles are all the same size (except early small bearing 9 in)so run one if you want to.

This axle also will have:

C-Clips

If you dont mind, but they do make c-clip eliminators for those axles..

after 93, or maybe 95 they went to the higher spline count, i think. i think its time for you to start pulling and counting to find out for sure. on the bright side, if you get it cheap enough you can pull the shafts and get new ones for the higher spline when you buy a locker, so it doesn't matter that much. just make sure that year has disk brakes on it, those are a bit more expensive.

I'm not sure what was the first year for it but my '99 Crown Vic had four wheel disc with 13" rotors on the front and 12" rotors on the rear. That's some stopping power. :cool2: If you want big rear brakes for a 5 on 4 1/2 that's the way to go.
