I saw this air compressor http://www.oasis-off-road.com/page4.html and want one but I don't want to and won't pay the $700 for it. So i went to their spec page and its merely an electric winch motor and a york compressor mated together to form an electric compressor.
I like this idea better than using a belt drive system because it will provide me more functionality (i.e. I want a prtable compressor I can use in any of my vehicles and it would be helpful to be able to carry a compressor to where you needed it and just clamp onto a battery).
I checked with Warn and their replacement motors are 4.8hp rather than the 2.5hp used on the compressor above....would that work better or would it be a problem? I would think it would think the more hp the better, the question is will it tear up the York (I already have a york that I was going to use for my OBA project). Warns replacement 4.8hp motor is $195.
If you think the 4.8hp is too much I found another place that carries a sh!tload of different electric winch motors and snow plow motors http://www.wms1.com/speciality/winch/index.html . This place has a 2.5hp motor for $144 bucks or a heavy duty one directional motor for $125 that would also work as far as I can tell.
Has anyone built their own electric compressor? If so what issues did you run into? Do you see any major obstacles that will prevent me from completing this project? The only thing I don't know about is how to mate the compressor to the motor, and whether they have modified the shaft in anyway on the york.
If this works out, it would be easy to install quick connect mounting brackets on each vehicle I have and even have a quick connect tank that could either be hard mounted or mobil to provide a way to remotely run air tools etc. when needed.
Any comments (constructive :flipoff2: ) and ideas would be appreciated.
