: Advice on '99 Superduty PSD
Garza 08-20-2004, 09:34 AM I am looking at a '99 4x4 PSD crew cab, truck is in great shape, its auto but it has 217,000 miles on it, guys is asking 16,000. I want to see if I can get it for 15,000 out the door including TTL. I have done some searching on the diesel stop, I am almost certain this is the 1999.5 model since it has the badge on the driver door instead of the fender. Should I stay away from that much milage or? What should I expect? I have done a lot of research on dodges lately and now have found a ford I like.
Thanks,
Ricky
CINCH 08-20-2004, 10:56 AM IMO, im not a fan of the PSD, had 2 and went CTD, I wouldn't due to the miles
I have 249,000 on my 99 CTD and still runs great
Garza 08-20-2004, 02:36 PM I talked to the owner, and asked about any excess blow by, problems ect. He said it ran great, no leaks ect..I was told that when I go look at it, inspect the filter tube into the turbo to see if it has dirt in it. If so, I guess that means there is some dirt in the engine. I am driving 1.5 hours to go drive it in the morning. I wanted a dodge, but everyone I find is either long bed which I do not want, automatic with a ton of miles(I trust the Ford auto's before the dodge ones), or is just plain been used as a hard work truck. This ford is super clean, just has lots of highway time. I am only looking for a diesel that will last me 3-4 years until my wife is done with nursing school, then I will trade in for a brand new truck.

fj40charles 08-20-2004, 07:31 PM Be sure to ask the owner about SCA levels. If the owner doesn know what SCA is.. You better find another truck.

I dont even know what sca levels are.
KS Toy 08-21-2004, 12:22 PM Sounds fair and looks good, buy it.
edit:what are sca levels?
Garza 08-21-2004, 12:49 PM Found out about the SCA levels, and went by my local Freightliner before I left town and got a test strip. The coolant was very green, no dirt, good to
-40, but the other areas basically showed that it needed something added. Im not 100% sure how to read the chart. It has a brand new turbo on it, I did notice that. There are no leaks, and it is very clean. Supposedly a farm truck with a lot of hiway miles due to horse shows. It started right up every time, and still had lots of power. Idled fine, no hesitation or stumbling like the couple of CTD's I drove. Tranny shifted ok, a little time in between shifts, but I dont really now how they are supposed to feel. I drove my grandfathers '03 and it felt the same. There was little if any dirt in the air tube, I did notice the "what I was told is common" is some oilyness about 3/4 of the way into the tube by some kind of port. I did pull the oil fill cap off and just a little smoke came out about the same as a gas truck, no big clouds or anything. No leaks on either diff, underneath and frame was very clean. Paint was good, a few scratches, but good for black. I think Im gonna get it. Now to the bank!!
Supergper 08-21-2004, 10:58 PM If you are seeing good signs of it being taken care of I wouldn;t worry about the mileage...I too have a 99 PSD with almost 280K on it and its still running super strong...starts first time everytime even in the cold winter mornings we occasionally get here in Utah...good luck;)
