I read somewhere that the best Land Cruiser axles to use on a trail rig are the ones from a '78 FJ40. It had something to do with '78 being the only year with fine splines and the 4.11 gear ratio. Can someone clear this up for me? I have a '78 that I'm parting out and want to know if it's worth swapping the rear axle along with the front axle onto my '72 FJ40. Thanks.

If you don't already have discs on your '72, it is worth it for that. In the rear, you could just swap the 3rd because the axles are exactly the same, '78 just had a fine spline pinion. All aftermarket gears come with a fine spline pinion. I would rather do a truck knuckle/brake/birf swap than the '78 front axle because you will get the larger and stronger birfs. Any way you cut it, the '78 front is better than the stock '72, and the pickup swap is best of all these options.

Those are the best 3rds for sure, that ia correct. What FE states would be a good upgrade as well when you go through your first Birfield break.
