so i got a mig welder and was reading up on welding, and my contact tip is short, like 1/4" inside my cone and read that is called splatter welding. and the type of welding that we do is "dip" welding where the contct tip sticks out of the gas cone. how is your mig tip set up?? pros and cons? what do you recomend? practice with this or get the longer tips?

for just staring to weld haveing the tip in side the cone mite be good for you so you dont stick the tip. just use it will be ok (is your welder new) if so thatz the way it is. :flipoff2:

Ive never heard of splatter wlding or dip welding. i think what youre refering to is the type of transfer you want to use. spray is a type of transfer but dont worry about trying to learn that. i have no idea what dip welding is. what you will want to do is set up your welder with a solid wire and 75-25 sheilding gas. set the tip in just a little bit from the "gas cone" part of the torch. if set up properly this will give you short circuit or short arc transfer (same thing, different names). this is the easiest type of transfer for MIG IMO. you dont want the "contact tip" sticking past the sheilding cone because you wont get a very good gas cloud around your welding area. this will give you splatter and porosity in your weld. theres a real good package available from miller welding. its on their website, bout 30 bucks they send you like 12 books on all sorts of welding, id suggest getting that and doing some reading. its a very good resource

Leave your tip alone and go get some welding gel. After you get your tip hot from welding a few inches dip the tip all the way down in the gel. When you pull it out you will see everything dripping out that is good. Then when you weld there will be no splatter at all and it helps keep your tip cleaner. That is what I do and I like the tip inside the gun so you do not haft to qorry about getting to close and I also feel like it does a better job of getting the shield gas where it need's to be..

Agreed, anti spatter (gel) is awesome stuff, i dont have any but its real nice to use. it will help to keep the gas ports from getting clogged allowing the sheilding gas to form a nice little cloud around your weld area. its nice
