: What's safer, Stock Tank or Aux Tank?

What do you guys think is safer in my 77 FJ40, the OEM Steel Stock Tank by itself or an Aux Tank by itself as the only fuel tank?

I have never really liked the gas tank being under the drivers seat, but then again I guess if you got rear ended the rear tank could rupture. I have also never heard of any pinto esque stories about 40's going up in flames.

I don't think it's an issue off road, I am more concerned about a wreck on the road. I never gave a crap about this stuff untill I had a kid...

Thanks

They both are probably safe. I would guess the OEM one is safer. It's inside the cab where it would take a hell of an accident to get through. The Aux could be impacted much easier and if its leaking you wouldn't know it (smell). Sparks can happen easily from something dragging on the road to someone throwing a cig butt.

Again,
They are probably both safe. I would run both for the extra distance. Pull the in cab one if you are going to use the space for storage or something else.

Yeah, I wouldn't sweat it over either one. I've had both in for longer than I can remember and I think they're both safe. And you CAN smell it if EITHER tank has a leak.

You might think about running both tanks. It's really nice having the extra fuel. If you do run both, Hook it up to where an electric pump sends fuel from the aux tank to the stock tank. That way as you use up the fuel in your stock tank, you can transfer fuel from the rear to the stock tank (even while you're driving) and read your fuel supply off your stock gauge.

I think the Toyota tank is 18 gals (full to empty 12 gals / 6 gal reserve) and the aux is 24 gals.

The only ones that really worry about interior tanks have leakers, or smoke!

Or both! :nuke:

The safest thing would be to run diesel since it will not ignite with a spark.
